Kougarok River
The Kougarok (Koo-gah-rok) River (''Kuuguraq'' in Inupiaq, lit. ''little river'') is a river on the Seward Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska. Formed by the merger of the two smaller streams Macklin Creek and Washington Creek, the main stem is about long, flowing generally south from near Taylor Airport. It flows into the Kuzitrin River, which flows west into the Imuruk Basin, connected to the bay of Port Clarence on the Bering Sea. In 1900 the river was reported under the same name as Kugruk River, this was later changed. The river drew gold miners in the early 1900s, though development slowed after World War II. The Nome-Taylor Highway follows the river for much of its course. Port Clarence, Alaska
Port Clarence is a census-designated place (CDP) in Nome Census Area, Alaska. The population was 24 at the 2010 census, up from 21 in 2000. It is located on the spit separating Port Clarence Bay from the Bering Strait. History Missionary Sheldon Jackson's greatest success with his Teller Reindeer Station at Port Clarence, figured in the Overland Relief Expedition in 1897 to save marooned whalers near Point Barrow. During the 1898-1899 gold rush in Nome, smaller quantities of both gold and high-grade tin were mined in Port Clarence. The Harriman Alaska Expedition visited Port Clarence in 1899, making a photographic record of Alaska Natives. In 1900, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey charted the coastline. Kugruk River
The Kugruk River is a stream, long, in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is the largest tributary of the Kuzitrin River. It begins near Imuruk Lake on the Seward Peninsula and flows generally north to Kugruk Lagoon, at Kotzebue Sound on the Chukchi Sea. The river enters the lagoon southeast of Cape Deceit in the Northwest Arctic Borough. History In the late 19th century, the river's Inuit name was reported as "Koogroog" (not to be confused with the Kougarok River), but variants in other documents referred to it as "Mammoth" for mammoth bones found nearby, or "Swan". Imuruk Basin
The Imuruk Basin (''Imaġruk'' or ''Narvaġruk'' in Iñupiaq) is an approximately , long shallow estuary located on the Seward Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska. The estuary's drainage basin covers about one quarter of the peninsula. The basin is fed by the Kuzitrin, Kruzgamepa, Agiapuk, and Cobblestone Rivers and is drained by the Tuksuk Channel, which empties into Grantley Harbor (Pacific Ocean).
