Ajith Kosala Kuruppuarachchi (born 1 November 1964, Colombo) is a Sri Lankan Australian former cricketer who played in two Tests from 1986 to 1987. On his debut on 14 March 1986, he took five wickets in the first innings against Pakistan in Colombo, including a wicket with his third delivery. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer") refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. A five-wicket haul on debut is regarded by critics as a notable achievement. As of July 2022, 161 cricketers have taken a five-wicket haul on Test match debut, of which six are from Sri Lanka: Kosala Kuruppuarachchi, Upul Chandana, Akila Dananjaya, Lasith Embuldeniya, Praveen Jayawickrama, and Prabath Jayasuriya. Kuruppuarachchi and Chandana achieved the feat against Pakistan; Dananjaya and Jayawickrama achieved the feat against Bangladesh; Embuldeniya achieved his feat against South Africa, and Jayasuriya against Australia.
