Korkmaz Yiğit
Korkmaz Yiğit (born 1943, in Erzincan) is a Turkish businessman. He made his fortune in construction, and expanded into finance and media, but fell rapidly from grace in 1998 when apparent connections with mob figure Alaattin Çakıcı were revealed. Career After making his fortune in construction, Yiğit sought to move into finance in the mid-1990s. He bid in the privatization tender for Etibank, and after this was unsuccessful bought Bankekspres from Doğuş Holding for $100m in March 1997. In 1998, he acquired private television stations Kanal E and Tele 4, and then Kanal 6 (the latter for $110m). In August 1998, he bought the '' Ateş'' and ''Yeni Yüzyıl'' newspapers ($75m), and in early October he acquired control of ''Milliyet'' ($300m). Erzincan
Erzincan (; ku, Erzîngan), historically Yerznka ( hy, Երզնկա), is the capital of Erzincan Province in Eastern Turkey. Nearby cities include Erzurum, Sivas, Tunceli, Bingöl, Elazığ, Malatya, Gümüşhane, Bayburt, and Giresun. The city is majority Sunni Turkish with a significant Alevi Kurdish minority. History Acilisene, the ancient city that is now Erzincan, was the site of the Peace of Acilisene by which in AD 387 Armenia was divided into two vassal states, a smaller one dependent on the Byzantine Empire and a larger one dependent on Persia. This is the name (Ἀκιλισηνή in Greek) by which it is called by Strabo in his ''Geography'', 11.4.14. The etymological origin of the word is disputed, but it is agreed that the city was once called Erez. For a while it was called Justinianopolis in honour of Emperor Justinian. Doğan Media Group (''Doğan Yayın Holding A.Ş.'') was a Turkish media conglomerate, part of the Doğan Holding conglomerate. The company was established in 1997 to bring together Doğan's media properties. These include the '' Posta'', ''Hürriyet'' (including '' Fanatik''), and ''Radikal'' newspapers, the television channels Kanal D and CNN Türk, and the Doğan News Agency. It also operated ''Doğan Kitap'', a major book publisher, and ''Doğan Music Company'', a major music label. Doğan also operated print facilities and media distribution, for other newspapers and magazines as well as its own. From 1979 to 2011, Doğan Media Group owned '' Milliyet'' and ''Vatan''. Corruption In Turkey
Corruption in Turkey is an issue affecting the accession of Turkey to the European Union. Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index scores 180 countries according to their perceived level of public sector corruption on a scale of 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very honest). Since the current scale was introduced in 2012, Turkey's score has fallen from its highest score of 50 (2013) to its lowest, current score of 36 (2022). When the 180 countries in the Index were ranked by their score (with the country perceived to be most honest ranked 1), Turkey ranked 101 in 2022. The 1998 Türkbank scandal led to a no-confidence vote and the resignation of Prime Minister Mesut Yılmaz. Although Yılmaz was investigated by Parliament, a five-year statute of limitations prevented further action. The Savings Deposit Insurance Fund of Turkey ( tr, Tasarruf Mevduatı Sigorta Fonu), a.k.a. TMSF in abbreviated form, is the governing body concerned with matters of fund management and insurance in the Turkish banking system.
