Korea Open (badminton)
The Korea Open is an annual badminton event that is commonly held in Seoul, South Korea. The tournament used to be known as Korea Open Super Series because it became one of the BWF Super Series tournaments beginning with 2007. BWF categorised Korea Open as one of the seven BWF World Tour Super 500 The BWF World Tour is a Badminton World Federation#Grade 2, Grade 2 badminton tournament series, sanctioned by Badminton World Federation (BWF). Badminton
Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles" (with two players per side). Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing side's half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. Play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or (in their absence) the opposing side. The shuttlecock is a feathered or (in informal matches) plastic projectile which flies differently from the balls used in many other sports. Chung So-young
Chung So-young (; born 20 February 1967) is a former badminton player from South Korea. She was a gold medalist at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 in the women's doubles together with Hwang Hye-young, and was inducted into the Badminton Hall of Fame in 2003. Career Chung started to representing South Korea in the international tournament in November 1984. She won a bronze medal at the 1987 World Championships in the women's doubles with Kim Yun-ja. Partnered with Gil Young-ah, the duo ranked as world number 1 in 1993. Personal life Chung graduated from Gunsan Girls' High School and later in Jeonbuk National University. Ardy Wiranata
Ardy Bernardus Wiranata (born 10 February 1970) is an Indonesian former badminton player who rated among the top singles players in the world (several of whom were fellow Indonesians) during most of the 1990s. Career Quick, supple, and powerful, he won numerous international events and arguably had the best overall record of any player in the first half of the decade. Catrine Bengtsson (born 21 September 1969) is a retired female badminton player from Sweden. Career Bengtsson competed in badminton at the 1992 Summer Olympics in women's singles and women's doubles with Maria Bengtsson, and they lost in quarterfinals to Guan Weizhen and Nong Qunhua, of China, 15-4, 15-9. Gil Young-ah
Gil Young-ah (born April 11, 1970 in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do) is a former female badminton player from South Korea. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, she won the bronze medal in the women's doubles together with Shim Eun-jung. Four years later, at the Atlanta, Georgia, Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics, Olympics, she won the gold medal in the mixed doubles together with Kim Dong-moon and the silver medal in the women's doubles together with Jang Hye-ock. Zheng Yumin (, born 14 August 1967) is a former Chinese badminton player. Career Zheng Yumin, born in Fujian, is the younger brother of Zheng Yuli, a former top level player who won medals in World championships and World Cup. Yumin specialised in doubles. Huang Zhanzhong
Huang Zhanzhong (; born 5 November 1968) is a Chinese badminton player. He won the men's doubles title at the 1995 Asian Cup, and was part of Chinese team that won the 1990 Asian Games and 1995 Sudirman Cup. Huang competed in the men's doubles tournament at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Career Huang is a Wenzhou, Zhejiang natives, who started to know sport since he was in elementary school. Bang Soo-hyun (Hangul: 방수현; Hanja: 方銖賢; born 13 September 1972) is a former badminton player from South Korea who was one of the world's leading women's singles players of the 1990s. She was a contemporary and rival of Indonesia's Susi Susanti and China's Ye Zhaoying and recorded wins over both in major badminton tournaments. Thomas Haubro Lund (born 2 August 1968) is a retired badminton player from Denmark who affiliate with Kastrup Magleby club. Career Lund was one of the world's leading doubles specialists of the 1990s, particularly in mixed doubles. He was a silver medalist in both men's and mixed doubles at the 1991 IBF World Championships. In 1993 and 1995 he won consecutive gold medals in mixed doubles at the IBF World Championships, the first with Sweden's Catrine Bengtsson and the second with his compatriot Marlene Thomsen.
