Kontich
Kontich (, old spelling: ''Contich'') is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises the towns of Kontich proper and Waarloos. In 2021, Kontich had a total population of 21,260. The total area is 23.67 km³. Kontich exists of three parts: Kontich Centrum, Waarloos and Kontich Kazerne. Kontich Kazerne has a big industrial center and a train station on the line between Antwerp and Mechelen. The barracks (kazerne in Dutch) which gave the name to the settlement have closed however. The Centrum part of Kontich has the town center. The E19 highway between Antwerp and Brussels passes through Kontich. "Kontich" comes from the Latin word ''condacum'' which means confluence of 2 streams. Waarloos
Waarloos is a village and ''deelgemeente'' (sub-municipality) of the municipality of Kontich in the province of Antwerp, Belgium. The village is located about south of the city of Antwerp. History Waarloos was first mentioned in 1188 when the church became part of Lobbes Abbey. The ''heerlijkheid'' (landed estate) belonged to the Lordship of Mechelen. The village was mainly an agricultural community. In 1880, Maes Brewery was established in Waarloos by Egied Maes. Their main product was Maes pils which became one of the best selling beers in Belgium. From 1970 onwards, production of other beers stopped and Maes pils was their only product. In 1988, the brewery merged into Alken-Maes. In 2003, the brewery in Waarloos closed and production was transferred to Alken. In 2008, Maes became a brand of Heineken. Benedict Neefs
Dom Benedictus Neefs, O.Cist. (french: Benoit Neefs; 19 January 1741 – 7 November 1790) was the 46th abbot of Hemiksem Abbey. Corneel Neefs was born in Kontich and entered Hemiksem Abbey in 1762, taking the monastic name Benedictus. Abbot of Hemiksem In 1780 he was elected abbot after the death of Abbot Bruyndonckx, and installed after imperial approbation. He sat in the States of Brabant after the death of the abbot of Vlierbeek as a representative of the first estate. His local and economic power reached far beyond the monastery walls, as the territory of the abbey was extensive. He erected multiple buildings and continued to reshape the abbey buildings during his time in office. He commissioned an impressive calvary for the abbey church from the painter Willem Jacob Herreyns. Neefs was known for his public opposition to the reforms of Emperor Joseph II. Martinus Dom
Dom Martinus Dom, O.C.R., (24 December 1791 – 9 December 1873) was a Belgian Trappist monk. He served as the first abbot of the Trappist Abbey of Westmalle, where he founded the Westmalle Brewery. Early life He was born Frans Daniël Dom in Kontich, Flanders, then part of the Southern Netherlands, to Jan Frans Dom, a cattle merchant, and Elisabeth Van Berckelaer. He was baptised on Christmas Day 1791, the day after his birth, in the local parish church, the Church of St. Martin of Tours. As a young man Dom served as a fourrier in the Napoleonic Army. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, he returned home to everyday life. He became a notorious partygoer and became engaged to a young woman. Matz Willy Els Sels (born 26 February 1992) is a Belgian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Ligue 1 club Strasbourg and the Belgium national team. Hilde Rens (3 March 1972 – 25 June 2009), better known by her stage name Yasmine, was a Belgian singer, presenter and television personality. Career Music Rens became known as a singer during the 1980s. Duffel
Duffel () is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp. The municipality comprises only the town of Duffel proper. On 1 January 2020, Duffel had a total population of 17,664. The total area is 22.71 km² which gives a population density of 778 inhabitants per km².
