Koko Komégné
Koko Komégné is a visual artist based in Douala and a promoter of the contemporary art scene in Cameroon. Life and career Koko Komégné was born in 1950 in Batoufam. In 1956 he moves to Yaoundé where he attends school and he starts drawing and listening to all sorts of musics. In 1960–62 he produces his first sculpture ''Le Boxeur'' and in 1965, after many ups and downs, he moves to Douala where he meets Jean Sabatier, an amateur painter who will draw him to paint. In 1966 Komégné opens his first atelier: as a training, he starts reproducing art works by major painters (Van Gogh, Picasso, etc.) and for living he makes advertising billboards. In 1968 he wins the drawing competition ''Biscuits Berlin'' and he works for one year on a little boat which navigates the coasts of Central Africa. Batoufam
Batoufam (local language: Tswefap) is a town and commune in the department of Koung-Khi, Cameroon. It has an estimated population of 27,000. Batoufam is also a language and is part of the Bantu group of languages. History The founder of Batoufam was named Nankap. He was a hunter and a member of Bleble, a Tikar people that moved from the Adamawa Plateau to Bali. During the migration to Bali, Nankam deserted the Bleble, and served the Bangwa Chief. He was very similar to the Bangwa Chief because of his hunting skills and service attitude. For this, he was give the title of "Fodoum" (translation: "Chancellor"). After Kankam fell in love with Princess Melo, the Bangwa Chief decided to kill Kankam. But when Nankap learned of the plot, he fled to Bandrefam. Eventually, the Chief of Bandrefam gave Nankap a plot (Tou-fam; translation: "above Fam") to build his home. Simon Njami
Simon Njami (born 1962 in Lausanne) is a writer and an independent curator, lecturer, art critic and essayist. He published his first novel "Cercueil et Cie" in 1985, followed by "Les Enfants de la Cité" in 1987, and "Les Clandestins" and "African Gigolo" in 1989. He has written biographies of James Baldwin and Léopold Sédar Senghor, several short texts, scripts for cinema, and documentary films. Njami is the co-founder of Revue Noire, a journal of contemporary African and extra-occidental art, and he was Visiting Professor at UCSD (University of San Diego California). After conceiving the Ethnicolor Festival in Paris in 1987, he curated many international exhibitions being among the first ones to think and show African contemporary artists work on international stages. Atelier Viking
{{Short description, Artist-run initiative in Douala, Cameroon Atelier Viking is a studio and an artist-run initiative based in Douala, Cameroon. Artist Viking Kanganyam André founded atelier Viking in March 1976 to promote contemporary art in Cameroon. The paucity of art galleries in Douala encouraged Kanganyam to create a space where artists could be trained and exhibited. Viking taught visual arts (painting, sculpture, graphic art, drawing and serygraphy) to small groups of students. Viking encouraged his students to explore the potentialities of all media and specifically the possibility of transforming and re-using materials found in loco. Hervé Yamguen
Hervé Yamguen (born 1971 in Douala) is a Cameroonian painter and sculptor. A self-taught artist, he launched himself in painting, sculpture and he discovered a passion for the writing which enables him to wonder about its daily live. He currently works on plays. He grew up in Douala, and currently lives and works in one of the most popular districts of the city, New Bell. It is this environment which nourishes the imaginary of Hervé whose plastic work turns around the face, the body and the place of it in the world. Hervé Youmbi
Hervé Gabriel Ngamago Youmbi, born in Bangui, Central African Republic on March 25, 1973, is a Cameroonian artist who lives and works in Douala. He is a founding member of the Cercle Kapsiki, a collective of five Cameroonian artists, founded in 1998. Biography Hervé Youmbi has a diploma from the Institut de Formation Artistique (IFA) in Mbalmayo, Cameroon, and later studied at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg (France) from October 2000 to June 2001. He teaches art at several towns in Cameroon, at the art institutes of Nkongsamba and Foumban, and in the art academies and universities of Douala and Dschang. Portraiture is the basis of Youmbi's work.
