Kobzarska Sich
Kobzarska Sich (Ukrainian: Кобзарська Січ) is a summer music camp devoted to learning bandura and Ukrainian choral music. Kobzarska Sich is held every August at All Saints Camp in Emlenton, Pennsylvania. In its current format, four courses are offered: Bandura Course, Junior Bandura Workshop (for children between the ages of 9 and 11), the Ukrainian Choral Workshop, and the Ukrainian Sacred Music Workshop. For many years the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus has sponsored various bandura camps and workshops throughout North America. The music camp Kobzarska Sich, located in Emlenton, Pennsylvania, was established in 1979 by legendary bandurist and composer Hryhory Kytasty, the long-standing conductor of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus and inspiration to generations of bandura enthusiasts. Ukrainian Language
Ukrainian ( uk, украї́нська мо́ва, translit=ukrainska mova, label=native name, ) is an East Slavic language of the Indo-European language family. Bandura
A bandura ( uk, банду́ра) is a Ukrainian plucked string folk instrument. It combines elements of the zither and lute and, up until the 1940s, was also often referred to by the term kobza. Early instruments (c. 1700) had 5 to 12 strings and similar to the lute. In the 20th century, the number of strings increased initially to 31 strings (1926), then to 56 strings – 68 strings on modern 'concert' instruments (1954).Mizynec, V. Folk Instruments of Ukraine. Emlenton, Pennsylvania
Emlenton is a borough in Clarion and Venango counties in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The population was 625 at the 2010 census. Of these, 617 were in Venango County, and eight were in Clarion County. The borough is home to the Emlenton Bridge on I-80, which spans the Allegheny River. Hryhory Kytasty
Hryhoriy Trokhymovych Kytasty ( uk, Григорій Трохимович Китастий) (January 17, 1907 – April 6, 1984) was a Ukrainian émigré composer and conductor. In 2008, he was honored with the Hero of Ukraine state decoration. Biography Early years Hryhory Kytasty was born in the town of Kobeliaky, Poltava Governorate. After completing initial music studies at the Poltava Musical College, Kytasty studied under Mykola Hrinchenko, Levko Revutsky and Viktor Kosenko at the Institute of Music and Drama named after Mykola Lysenko from 1930–35 in Kyiv. Julian Kytasty
Julian Kytasty ( uk, Юліян Китастий) is an American composer, singer, kobzar, bandurist, flautist, and conductor of Ukrainian descent. He was born January 23, 1958, in Detroit, Michigan, in a family of refugees. Biography His first studies were in the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus, in which his father, uncles and grandfather played in and conducted before him. He has been a resident of New York City since 1980. He moved there to found the New York Bandura Ensemble (which also at various times included minimalist composer-bandurist Michael Andrec, composer-lutenist Roman Turovsky-Savchuk, vocalists Gisburg and Natalia Honcharenko, and kobzar Jurij Fedynskyj), and began a career as a solo artist and bandura teacher that has taken him all over the world, from the Inuit lands to Patagonia. Marko Farion ( uk, Марко Дмитрович Фаріон ) (born 03/28/1962 in Cleveland, Ohio) is a Ukrainian American bandurist, opera singer and dentist. Farion currently resides in Sterling Heights, Michigan with dental offices in Clawson, Michigan and Artesia, New Mexico. His music has been featured on PBS. He has been referenced in several books about bandura and bandurists. Oleh Mahlay
Oleh Mahlay is an American violinist, pianist, bandurist, choral conductor and lawyer of Ukrainian ethnicity. Mahlay has made a significant contribution to Ukrainian emigre music, primarily through his work with the Ukrainian bandura and the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus. Merited Figure of Arts of Ukraine. Alexis Kochan ( uk, Алексіс Коxан) is a Ukrainian–Canadian composer and singer. She was born in 1953 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Ukrainian immigrants. Biography Singer Alexis Kochan was born in 1953 and raised in Winnipeg's North End. She earned a master's degree in psychology from the University of Manitoba in 1977 while studying music and beginning a multi-faceted career as singer, teacher, producer, and recording artist. Allegheny River
The Allegheny River ( ) is a long headwater stream of the Ohio River in western Pennsylvania and New York (state), New York.
