Knanaya Region
Knanaya Region is a subdivision of the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago. This region was officially established by Mar Jacob Angadiath, the bishop of the diocese on 30 April 2006. On that day, the bishop appointed Fr. Abraham Mutholath, the then Vicar General for Knanaya Community, as the first director of the Knanaya Region. The purpose of this region is to coordinate all the pastoral activities of the diocese under the leadership of Knanaya Region director who is also one of the Vicar Generals of the diocese. According to the decree of the Bishop, all Knanaya Catholic parishes, Knanaya missions, and all the Knanaya Catholic faithful who live in the USA outside the proper territory of an established Knanaya Catholic parish or mission will come under this region. Kuriakose Kunnacherry
Kuriakose Kunnassery (11 September 1928 – 14 June 2017) was a Syro-Malabar Catholic hierarch. He was the fourth bishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam and the first Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kottayam. He served as priest in the Diocese of Kottayam for 13 years from December 21, 1955 to February 24, 1968. Then he was bishop for 49 years from February 24, 1968 to June 14, 2017. Kunnacherry was head of the Diocese of Kottayam for 31 years from May 5, 1974 to December 19, 2005. He was elevated as Archbishop on May 19, 2005. As a bishop and Archbishop of Kottayam, Kunnacherry took initiative to establish many churches, charitable, and welfare institutions in various parts of Kerala. He also took initiative in establishing missions in various parts of the world for the Knanaya migrants. Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy Of Kottayam
The Knanaya Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam is a metropolitan Archeparchy of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in India. The Archeparchy is exclusively for Knanaya faithful who are the descendants of Syriac Judeo-Christians (early East Syriac Christians) who migrated from South Mesopotamia to Kodungallur (Muziris) in South India in 345 AD. History of the Archeparchy Community formation Traditional belief is that St. Thomas, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus, had introduced Christianity in the Malabar coast in South India. His port of entry was Kodungalloor, formerly known as Muziris. Trade relations between the Middle East and the Malabar coast might have favored the arrival of St. Thomas to Kodungallur. Joy Alappat
Mar John Alappatt (born September 27, 1956) is an Indian-born bishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in the United States. He serves as the eparch of St. Thomas Eparchy of Chicago since 2022. He served as the auxiliary bishop of the same eparchy from 2014–2022. Biography Early life and ministry John Joy Alappatt was born in Parappukara, Kerala, India. He studied for the priesthood at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary in Vadavathoor, and was ordained a priest for the Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Irinjalakuda in India on December 31, 1981, by Bishop James Pazhayattil. Alappatt continued his studies at St. Joseph's Pontifical Institute in Aluva an at the Adheva University in Wattair. He was then engaged in pastoral work in Chalkudy, Mala, the cathedral in Irinjalakuda, and as a chaplain in Chennai. Knanaya Catholic Parish, Los Angeles
St. Pope Pius X Knanaya Catholic Church located in Montebello, California in the US was established as a mission on 17 March 2002 and elevated as a parish on 31 July 2010 for the Knanaya Catholics living in Southern California by Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath. Before the official establishment of the mission, the community had monthly Syro-Malabar Holy Mass while being members of the local Latin Catholic parishes. The Knanaya Catholic Mission of Los Angeles bought a church at 124 N. 5th Street in Montebello from Montebello Orthodox Church and converted it as a Syro-Malabar Catholic Church under the leadership of the then mission director Fr. Thomas Mulavanal. Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath consecrated the church and elevated it as a parish on 31 July 2010. The parish serves around 90 families. Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy Of Mississauga
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Mississauga is an eparchy for all Syro-Malabar Catholics in Canada. It comprises 53 parishes which includes both churches and missions, with churches or missions in most provinces of Canada. It is currently the largest diocese in the world by area, stretching from the east coast of Canada all the way through the prairies and to the west coast, covering the whole of Canada. Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church Chicago
Sacred Heart Knanaya Catholic Church located in Maywood, Illinois in the United States is the first Knanaya Catholic Church established outside the juridical boundary of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam. This church is also the first church of the Knanaya Region under the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago.
