Kleptomania (album)
''Kleptomania'' is the fourth and final album by English rock band Mansun, released posthumously in September 2004, following the band's split, as a triple album. The first CD features the material that was to form the basis of the band's next album, which was originally going to be self-titled, and the other 2 CDs feature EP tracks, outtakes and demos. The band split up while recording songs for the album ''Kleptomania'', leaving unfinished tracks that were never released. An extensive explanation of the break-up has never been made public although a press release by Paul Draper stated that the band had simply "grown apart". EMI had originally not intended to release the material until an online petition, which gained over 4000 signatures, demonstrated that there was demand for it from fans. Mansun
Mansun were an English alternative rock band, formed in Chester in 1995. The band comprised vocalist/rhythm guitarist Paul Draper, bassist Stove King, lead guitarist/backing vocalist Dominic Chad, and drummer Andie Rathbone. It was announced in May 2003 that the band had split up earlier that year, whilst in the process of recording their fourth album, and some of their archival recording of the album later released on their final album, ''Kleptomania'' (2004). Queen (band)
Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1970 by Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals) and Roger Taylor (Queen drummer), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), later joined by John Deacon (bass). Their earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, hard rock and Heavy metal music, heavy metal, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works by incorporating further styles, such as arena rock and pop rock. Before forming Queen, May and Taylor had played together in the band Smile (band), Smile. Shot By Both Sides
"Shot by Both Sides" is a song written by Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley, and performed by the English post-punk band Magazine. It was released in January 1978 as the band's first single, reaching No. 41 on the UK Singles Chart and appearing, a few months later, on their debut album ''Real Life''. The song has been cited as a seminal work of the post-punk genre, as well as a pop punk and new wave song. By the time of the single's recording, Magazine consisted of only four members, as original keyboardist Bob Dickinson had left the band the previous year. The cover artwork was designed by Malcolm Garrett, based on the 1886 work ''La Chimere regarda avec effroi toutes choses'' by Symbolist artist Odilon Redon (1840–1916). "Skin Up Pin Up" and "Flourella" are two songs by English alternative rock band Mansun. The songs were written and produced by band-leader Paul Draper. "Skin Up Pin Up" was recorded in London during the group's first recording session and "Flourella" during the group's second recording session in Ewloe, North Wales. The single was released as a double A-side on white 7-inch vinyl and CD and charted at number 91 on the UK Singles Chart. Both songs were later reworked and re-released in 1997. "Flourella" was rerecorded and remixed for inclusion on the group's debut album, though was dropped and instead appeared on the " She Makes My Nose Bleed" single. "Closed for Business" is a song by English rock band Mansun. It was released as the lead song on ''Seven EP'' in 1997 and became their second top ten hit on the UK Singles Chart. Overview ''Seven EP'' was released in the interim between the touring of the band's début album and the recording of their second album, ''Six''. The music on the EP reveals a transitional sound, in which the club-crossover britpop style of their earliest work is left behind for a more organic sound, one closer to progressive rock and post-punk. Dominic Chad
Dominic Chad (born 5 June 1972 in Exeter, Devon, England) is an English musician, formerly the lead guitarist, backing vocalist, arranger and co-writer of the rock band Mansun. Biography Early days Born in Exeter, Devon, Chad grew up in Maidstone, Kent where he attended Maidstone Grammar School. Dominic went on to study French and Russian at Bangor University, where he met bassist Mark Howard. They formed the band "Floating Bear" in 1991 with Lance Paine, Pete James and Iain Jenner and released a five-track cassette entitled "Barely Real". The band regularly played at the university's student bar including an Amnesty benefit gig, and also played at Pontardawe Festival. Howard Devoto
Howard Devoto (born Howard Andrew Trafford, 15 March 1952) is a retired English singer and songwriter, who began his career as the frontman for punk rock band Buzzcocks, but then left to form Magazine, one of the first post-punk bands. After Magazine, he went solo and later formed indie band Luxuria. His singing has been characterized as a "speak-sing voice that veered between amused croon and panicked yelp". Biography Born in Scunthorpe, Devoto grew up in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and Moortown, Leeds, where he attended Leeds Grammar School and met and befriended future Buzzcocks manager Richard Boon. A greatest hits album or best-of album is a type of compilation album that collects popular and commercially successful songs by a particular artist or band. Magazine (band)
Magazine were an English rock band formed in 1977 in Manchester in England by singer Howard Devoto and guitarist John McGeoch. After leaving the punk group Buzzcocks in early 1977, Devoto decided to create a more progressive and less "traditional" rock band. The original lineup of Magazine was composed of Devoto, McGeoch, Barry Adamson on bass, Bob Dickinson on keyboards and Martin Jackson on drums. Their debut album ''Real Life'' (1978) was critically acclaimed and was one of the first post-punk albums. After releasing two other albums, ''Secondhand Daylight'' and ''The Correct Use of Soap'', McGeoch left the band in 1980 to join Siouxsie and the Banshees. B-sides
The A-side and B-side are the two sides of phonograph records and cassettes; these terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings. The A-side usually features a recording that its artist, producer, or record company intends to be the initial focus of promotional efforts and radio airplay and hopefully become a hit record. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that typically receives less attention, although some B-sides have been as successful as, or more so than, their A-sides. Use of this language has largely declined in the 21st century as the music industry has transitioned away from analog recordings towards digital formats without physical sides, such as CDs, downloads and streaming.
