"''Klaatu barada nikto''" is a phrase that originated in the 1951 science fiction film ''The Day the Earth Stood Still''. The humanoid alien protagonist of the film, Klaatu ( Michael Rennie), instructs Helen Benson ( Patricia Neal) that if any harm befalls him, she must say the phrase to the robot Gort ( Lockard Martin). In response, Gort does not do anything hostile but instead retrieves Klaatu's corpse and resurrects him. The Robot Hall of Fame describes the phrase as "one of the most famous commands in science fiction" and Frederick S. Clarke of '' Cinefantastique'' called it "the most famous phrase ever spoken by an extraterrestrial." Usage in the film Edmund H. North, who wrote ''The Day the Earth Stood Still'', also created the alien language used in the film, including the phrase "''Klaatu barada nikto''". Michael Rennie (born Eric Alexander Rennie; 25 August 1909 – 10 June 1971) was a British film, television and stage actor, who had leading roles in a number of Hollywood films, including his portrayal of the space visitor Klaatu in the science fiction film ''The Day the Earth Stood Still'' (1951). In a career spanning more than 30 years, Rennie appeared in more than 50 films and in several American television series. ''The Day The Earth Stood Still'' is the 14th studio album by American singer-songwriter Willie Nile, released on August 13, 2021 by River House Records, it was co-produced by Nile and Stewart Lerman who has worked with Nile on nine of his previous albums. Grammy-award-winning musician Steve Earle is a guest artist on this album. Background Upon seeing the deserted streets and boarded up stores of New York City because of Covid-19, Nile was reminded of scenes from the 1951 sci-fi movie ''The Day the Earth Stood Still''. Nile uses the phrase "''Klaatu barada nikto''" in the chorus of the title track of the album. Drawing from his Covid lockdown experiences, in June 2020, he began writing songs for the album. A few years earlier, Nile had been introduced to Congressman John Lewis by Nile's friend, Congressman Joe Crowley. Lewis passed away on July 17, 2020. Willie Nile (born Robert Noonan; June 7, 1948) is an American singer-songwriter. In 1980, Nile released his self-titled debut album. His early career was interrupted by various problems, but he eventually returned to recording and performing in the US and Europe, establishing himself as a singer-songwriter. Early life Born in Buffalo, New York, into what he called "a gregarious Irish Catholic family". He grew up with two older brothers who played piano, and a mother who "used to always have music in the house.
