Kjotve The Rich
Kjotve the Rich (Old Norse: ''Kjǫtvi hinn auðgi'', Norwegian: ''Kjøtve den Rike'') was a king of Agder, then one of the petty kingdoms of Norway during the late 9th century. Kjotve led the western Norwegian kings against King Harald Fairhair (''Harald Hårfagre'') at the Battle of Hafrsfjord (''Slaget i Hafrsfjorden''). Defeated by Harald, Kjotve fled; many of his allies were killed in the battle. His son Thorir Haklang was a berserker who fell during the Battle of Hafrsfjord. Popular Culture Kjotve appears as the first main assassination target under the name "Kjotve the Cruel" in ''Assassin's Creed Valhalla''. Contrary to history, Kjotve's son in the game is instead named Gorm Kjotvesson, furthermore, in the mobile title ''Assassin's Creed: Rebellion'' through a tie-in event, ''The Ravens' Wound'', Kjotve has a second son, Hrolfr. Agder
Agder is a county (''fylke'') and traditional region in the southern part of Norway. The county was established on 1 January 2020, when the old Vest-Agder and Aust-Agder counties were merged. Since the early 1900s, the term Sørlandet ("south country, south land, southland") has been commonly used for this region, sometimes with the inclusion of neighbouring Rogaland. Before that time, the area was considered a part of Western Norway. The area was a medieval petty kingdom, and after Norway's unification became known as ''Egdafylki'' and later ''Agdesiden'', a county within the kingdom of Norway. The name Agder was not used after 1662, when the area was split into smaller governmental units called Nedenæs, Råbyggelaget, Lister, and Mandal. The petty kingdoms of Norway ( nb, smårike) were the entities from which the later Kingdom of Norway was founded. Before the unification of Norway in 872 and during the period of fragmentation after King Harald Fairhair's death, Norway was divided in several small kingdoms. Some could have been as small as a cluster of villages, and others comprised several of today's counties. By the time of the first historical records of Scandinavia, about the 8th century, a number of small political entities existed in Norway. The exact number is unknown, and would probably also fluctuate with time. It has been estimated that there were 9 petty realms in Western Norway during the early Viking Age. Archaeologist Bergljot Solberg on this basis estimates that there would have been at least 20 in the whole country. According to traditions current in Norway and Iceland in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, he reigned from 872 to 930 and was the first King of Norway. Supposedly, two of his sons, Eric Bloodaxe and Haakon the Good, succeeded Harald to become kings after his death. Much of Harald's biography is uncertain. The Battle of Hafrsfjord ( no, Slaget i Hafrsfjord) was a great naval battle fought in Hafrsfjord sometime between 872 and 900 that resulted in the unification of Norway, later known as the Kingdom of Norway.
