Kismet (1920 Film)
''Kismet'' is an American silent film version of the 1911 play '' Kismet'' by Edward Knoblock, starring Otis Skinner and Elinor Fair, and directed by Louis J. Gasnier. Skinner's daughter, author Cornelia Otis Skinner, plays a small role. This version was released by Robertson-Cole Distributing Company, and was released on VHS by Grapevine Video. In New England the distribution of the film was handled by Joseph P. Kennedy who organized a successful premiere in Boston.Beauchamp pp. 37-38 Skinner filmed the play again in a 1930 talkie. This film is lost but its Vitaphone soundtrack survives. Kismet (1930 Film)
''Kismet'' is a 1930 American pre-Code costume drama film photographed entirely in an early widescreen process using 65mm film that Warner Bros. called Vitascope. The film, now considered lost, was based on Edward Knoblock's play '' Kismet'', and was previously filmed as a silent film in 1920 which also starred Otis Skinner. Plot Hajj, a rascally beggar on the periphery of the court of Baghdad, schemes to marry his daughter to royalty and to win the heart of the queen of the castle himself. Production Warner Bros. spared no expense in making this picture. They spent $600,000 in producing it, and the extravagance of the film was noted by every reviewer. The film played in ten cities across the United States in the wide-screen Vitascope (65mm) version, while the rest of the country (which did not yet have theaters capable of playing widescreen films) were provided with standard 35mm prints. Thomas Aloyisus Kennedy (July 15, 1885 – October 6, 1965) was an American actor known for his roles in Hollywood comedies from the silent days, with such producers as Mack Sennett and Hal Roach, mainly supporting lead comedians such as the Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, Mabel Normand, Shemp Howard, Laurel and Hardy, and the Three Stooges. Kennedy also played dramatic roles as a supporting actor. Career For over 50 years, from 1915 to 1965, he appeared in over 320 films and television series, often uncredited. His first film was a short black and white comedy ''His Luckless Love''. He was in all nine Torchy Blane films as Gahagan, the poetry-spouting cop whose running line was, "What a day! What a day!" Hamilton Revelle (31 May 1867 – 11 April 1958) was a British-born stage and later silent screen actor. Biography He was born Arthur Lloyd Hamilton Engstrom at Moorish Castle in Gibraltar, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. His parents were George Lloyd Engström, an officer in the Royal Horse Artillery, and his wife Louisa Maria Revell. Revelle famously was arrested on 5 March 1900, along with his female co-star Olga Nethersole, for performing the play '' Sapho'' which was considered salacious for the time for its depiction of a woman who has love affairs with men to whom she is not married. Their theatre was padlocked by the New York Police. Two plays replaced ''Sapho'', ''The Second Mrs. Tanqueray'' and ''The Profligate''. Eventually, the two were freed and the play was allowed to continue. The trial for ''Sapho'' and Nethersole began on 3 April 1900 and Nethersole and Revelle were acquitted on 7 April. Sid Smith (actor)
Sidney Smith (February 28, 1892 – July 4, 1928), known on-screen as Sid Smith, was an American actor and director who appeared in short comedy films. Smith entered the motion picture industry in 1911, and eventually performed in 187 releases- most of them short silent film comedies, directing six shorts in total. Smith had his own starring series, but also worked in support of such comics as Monty Banks at Warner Bros. and Billy Bevan at the Mack Sennett studio. Smith died of alcohol poisoning, attributed to his consumption of bad liquor at a Malibu beach party.
