Kirkcaldy High School
Kirkcaldy High School is a 6-year co-educational comprehensive state school in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. History The school was established in 1582 as Kirkcaldy Burgh School; the "High School" name dates from the middle part of the 19th century. The school's motto is ''Usque conabor'', "I will strive to my utmost". The High School was originally on St Brycedale Avenue and part of the old building is now incorporated into Kirkcaldy College. In 1958 a new school was built on Dunnikier Way in the shape of a 'H' and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. In 1970 the last entrance exams for the school were taken after which pupils were zoned into their nearest high school. The following year Templehall High School (about half a mile away) became the "Junior" building of the High School originally accommodating 1st, 2nd & 3rd year pupils (later just 1st and 2nd years). Secondary School
A secondary school describes an institution that provides secondary education and also usually includes the building where this takes place. Gordon Brown
James Gordon Brown (born 20 February 1951) is a British former politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Labour Party from 2007 to 2010. He previously served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Tony Blair's government from 1997 to 2007, and was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1983 to 2015, first for Dunfermline East and later for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath. Sandy Hinshelwood
Alexander James Watt Hinshelwood (born ) is a former international rugby union player. He was capped twenty-one times for Scotland as a wing between 1966 and 1970.Griffiths, page 2:38-2:40 He scored five tries for Scotland. Hinshelwood was selected for the 1966 British Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand and the 1968 British Lions tour to South Africa. John Grahl
John Grahl (born August 1946) is a Scottish academic and professor. Life Grahl was brought-up in Burntisland, Fife, and was educated at Kirkcaldy High School between 1957 and 1964. He gained a master's degree in economics from the University of Edinburgh before moving to London where he gained a second masters in economics from Queen Mary, University of London. He was a lecturer at Queen Mary, University of London, Queen Mary and Westfield College, and London Metropolitan University, and became Professor of European Integration in the Human Resources Department at Middlesex University. Harry Gourlay
Harry Philip Heggie Gourlay (10 July 1916 – 20 April 1987) was a Scottish Labour Party politician. Gourlay was educated at Kirkcaldy High School and was a vehicles examiner. He served as a councillor on Kirkcaldy Town Council and Fife County Council from 1946 and was a governor of Dundee College of Education and a member of his local hospital board. Gourlay contested South Angus in 1955. He was member of parliament for Kirkcaldy Burghs (and then Kirkcaldy) from 1959 until he died in office shortly prior to the 1987 general election, at which Dr. Lewis Moonie was elected as his successor. Robert Fyfe
Robert Douglas Fyfe (25 September 1930 – 15 September 2021) was a Scottish actor, best known for his role as Howard in the long-running British sitcom ''Last of the Summer Wine'' from 1985 to 2010. Early life Fyfe was born in Kirkcaldy on 25 September 1930, the son of Douglas Fyfe, a watchmaker, and Mary Fyfe née Irvine. He attended Kirkcaldy High School, before studying English literature at Edinburgh University. He did not complete his degree and instead trained under Esmé Church at the Northern Theatre School in Bradford, graduating in 1954. Murray Elder, Baron Elder
Thomas Murray Elder, Baron Elder (born 9 May 1950), known as Murray Elder, is a British Labour politician and member of the House of Lords. Education Elder was educated at the Kirkcaldy High School and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Master of Arts in economic history. He was a childhood friend of Gordon Brown. Douglas Dryburgh
Douglas Dryburgh (born 30 January 1966 in Inverness or Kirkcaldy, Scotland) is a Scottish-Irish curler, originally from Kirkcaldy. He is a former World Junior champion skip and represented Great Britain at the 1998 Winter Olympics. Career Juniors In 1986, in his fifth Scottish Junior Curling Championship championship, and his first as a skip, Dryburgh lost in the final to David Aitken, who went on to win that year's World Junior Championship. Dryburgh missed his last shot in the 10th, 11th and 12th ends of that game, gaining him a "somewhat unwarranted reputation as a 'choker'". Ewan Dow
Ewan Dow (born 8 December 1971, Dunfermline) is a former Scottish politician. He was educated at Kirkcaldy and Beath High Schools and attended the University of Aberdeen though left prior to graduating. In May 1994 he was elected as a Scottish National Party councillor to the former Tayside Regional Council and after only eight weeks was controversially appointed to be Leader of the Administration after the resignation of the previous leader, Councillor Lena Graham. William Barron Coutts
Prof William Barron Coutts FRSE (26 May 1885 – 16 December 1946) was a Scottish physicist specialising in military science. He was generally referred to as Willie Coutts. Life He was born at the family home of Green Croft in Kinghorn, Fife on 26 May 1885, the son of Elizabeth Martin Barron and Robert Alexander Coutts, a bank accountant.
