The Scots ( sco, Scots Fowk; gd, Albannaich) are an ethnic group and nation native to Scotland. Historically, they emerged in the early Middle Ages from an amalgamation of two Celtic-speaking peoples, the Picts and Gaels, who founded the Kingdom of Scotland (or ''Alba'') in the 9th century. In the following two centuries, the Celtic-speaking Cumbrians of Strathclyde and the Germanic-speaking Angles of north Northumbria became part of Scotland. In the High Middle Ages, during the 12th-century Davidian Revolution, small numbers of Norman nobles migrated to the Lowlands. In the 13th century, the Norse-Gaels of the Western Isles became part of Scotland, followed by the Norse of the Northern Isles in the 15th century. Christopher Brandon Kirk (born May 8, 1985) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour. He won four tournaments on the PGA Tour between 2011 and 2015. He finished second in the 2014 FedEx Cup Playoffs and reached a career-high of 16 in the world rankings during 2015. Early years Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Kirk was reared in Woodstock, Georgia. He played college golf at the University of Georgia in Athens and was a member of their 2005 NCAA championship team. Greg M. Kirk (September 24, 1963 – December 22, 2019) was an American politician from Americus, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State Senate from the 13th District, representing the Georgian counties of Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Lee, Tift, Turner, Worth and parts of Sumter and Wilcox from 2014 until his death in 2019. Gerald Kirk
Gerald Kirk (14 July 1883 – 24 April 1915) was an English amateur footballer who played as a centre half in the Football League for Bradford City and Leeds City. He spent the majority of his career in non-League football with Ingleton, whom he captained. Personal life Kirk was born into a wealthy land-owning family. He attended Pocklington School and later married. On 1 September 1914, a month after Britain's entry into the First World War, Kirk enlisted as a private in the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). In October he was promoted to lance corporal and by 31 January 1915, he had been commissioned as a second lieutenant. In March 1915, Kirk's battalion was posted to the Western Front and entered the trenches near Bailleul. Geoffrey Kirk
Geoffrey Stephen Kirk, () was a British classicist who served as the 35th Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge. He published widely on pre-Socratic philosophy and the work of the Greek poet Homer, culminating in a six-volume philological commentary on the ''Iliad'' published between 1985 and 1993. Born into a middle-class family in Nottingham, he began studying classics at Clare College, Cambridge but joined the Royal Navy during World War II. He was deployed to the Aegean Sea as part of the Levant Schooner Flotilla and distinguished himself through his command of modern Greek. His service, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, became the basis for his 1997 memoir ''Towards The Aegean Sea''. Francis Kirk
Francis Kirk (1869) was one of a number of Enrolled Pensioner Guards (EPGs) who came to the Swan River Colony between 1850 and 1868, to guard and oversee the work of the prisoners transported to Western Australia. Early life Kirk was born at Achalive, County Tyrone . On 28 November 1823, aged 16 years, he enlisted with the British Army at Glasgow and served as a private for 22 years with the 8th Royal Artillery. His service included eight years in Corfu. He was discharged at Woolwich on 13 October 1846 with a pension. Kirk is recorded as exhibiting exemplary conduct and was awarded four Good Conduct badges. Evan Kirk (born July 22, 1987), is a Canadian professional lacrosse goaltender in the National Lacrosse League, currently playing for the Rochester Knighthawks and for the Peterborough Lakers of the Major Series Lacrosse. He was a member of Team Canada during the 2010 World Lacrosse Championship. Evan was born in Orangeville, Ontario. Elizabeth Mooney Kirk (February 23, 1914 – June 29, 2004), known by many as "Betty", spent her entire life advancing adult literacy. She worked with Frank Laubach using his "Each One Teach One" reading method. She traveled and taught in India, Africa and the United States. While working in Kenya, she provided the financial support for Barack Obama Sr. to come to the United States to study. Kirk co-authored many books with Dr. Frank Laubach and son Dr. Robert Laubach, which are still in use for teaching adults to read English. In this role, her work included running a mission boarding school in India and for two years she was head of a project for the British Government in Kenya training teachers and adults to read in some of the tribal languages. Donald James Kirk an American accountant, was chair of the Financial Accounting Standards Board. He became a partner with Price Waterhouse in 1967. He was one of the initial board members appointed to the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in 1973. In 1977 he became the second chairman of FASB, and served in that role for 9 years until his eligibility expired. He oversaw the transition of FASB meetings from closed, confidential meetings to being open and public.
