Kinsale Yacht Club
The Kinsale Yacht Club was founded in 1953. It is located in Kinsale in County Cork, Ireland. It lies approximately 120 nautical miles from Wales, 240 from North West France and 500 from the Galician Coast of North Spain. It is 30 km by road from Cork, Ireland's second city. Development The club was initially located in Scilly in a pair of cottages. The club races started off the pier and rarely left the harbour. In the 1960s, a new premises at the end of the pier road was purchased and developed over time into the building seen today. By the time the club had moved to its current location, the fleet included Albacores, Mirrors, Flying Fifteens, Dragons, Fireballs and Enterprises. The club began to develop junior sailing instruction. In the 1990s, the junior fleet extended to Optimists, Lasers and 420s. The senior fleet still includes; Dragons and Squibs. An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland (; meaning "the store" or "the treasury"), established in June 1948, is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) active in the areas of the environment and built heritage in Ireland. It considers itself the oldest environmental and non-governmental organisation in Ireland. Naturalist Robert Lloyd Praeger was its first president. An Taisce is a membership organisation and charity, not a state or semi-state organisation. River Bandon
The River Bandon ( ga, Abhainn na Bandan, from ''ban-dea'', meaning "goddess") is a river in County Cork, Ireland. The Bandon rises at Nowen Hill (one of the Shehy Mountains), to the north of Drimoleague. The river then flows to Dunmanway, before turning eastward towards the twin villages of Ballineen and Enniskean. It then makes its way through the centre of Bandon town, and on to Innishannon and Kilmacsimon, before draining into Kinsale Harbour on Ireland's south coast. Tributaries include the Sally River and the Brewery River at Dunmanway, the "Small Blackwater" near Ballineen, and the Bridewell River at Bandon. The river is crossed by a total of 15 bridges (including two footbridges). There were also four railway bridges, one of which is still intact (on farmland near Dunmanway). John Twomey (sailor)
John Twomey (born 7 July 1955) is an Irish Paralympic athlete and sailor. He has represented Ireland at 11 consecutive Paralympic games winning medals at three of them. Personal life Born in Cork, Twomey was a local hurler and a competitive cyclist until he was injured in a cycling competition in March 1970 aged just 14. He broke his back and has used a wheelchair since. Athlete Twomey became a track and field athlete representing Ireland from 1976 to 1996 at the Paralympics in the discus event. He won both Gold and Bronze medals in Discus and the Silver medal in table tennis. When he retired from athletics the timing was right that he could take up his other sport of Sailing at Olympic level. In 1996 Sailing was a demonstration event at the Paralympics and in 2000 Twomey qualified to represent Ireland in the Sonar.
