Kings Island (California)
Kings Island (formerly Bra's Island) is an island in the Old River in the south Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in San Joaquin County, California, southwest of Stockton. The small island is the smallest of a cluster of delta islands including Eucalyptus Island, Widdows Island, Victoria Island, and Coney Island, adjacent to Clifton Court Forebay. At above sea level with the surrounding waters kept a bay by a levee system, the island is accessible only by the one road from the Clifton Court levee or by boat. It appears on a 1978 United States Geological Survey map of the area. A levee (), dike (American English), dyke (English in the Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth English), embankment, floodbank, or stop bank is a structure that is usually soil, earthen and that often runs parallel (geometry), parallel to the course of a river in its floodplain or along low-lying coastlines. Clifton Court Forebay
Clifton Court Forebay is a reservoir in the San Joaquin River Delta region of eastern Contra Costa County, California, southwest of Stockton, California, Stockton. The estuary region the forebay is located in is only 1m to 3m above mean sea level. History The body of water was created in 1969 by inundating a tract as part of the California State Water Project. It serves as the intake point of the California Aqueduct for transport to Southern California, and feeds the Delta–Mendota Canal (a part of the Central Valley Project) to recharge San Joaquin Valley river systems. Geological context If a large enough earthquake happens near or at the Clifton Court Forebay, the California water system for irrigation and municipal use will be adversely affected. Old River (California)
The Old River is a tidal distributary of the San Joaquin River that flows for about through the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta in Northern California. The Old River was once the main channel of the San Joaquin until navigation (Stockton Deepwater Shipping Channel) and flood control projects in the late 19th and 20th century fixed the San Joaquin to its present course past Stockton. It diverges from the San Joaquin near Tracy, about upstream from Antioch, and first runs west towards Mountain House, then north to rejoin the San Joaquin above Antioch. The river is lined with levees that prevent flooding of the adjacent Delta islands, many of which lie below sea level. The Middle River runs east of and roughly parallel to Old River.
