King of the Ring was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) and WWE Network event produced by WWE, a Connecticut-based professional wrestling promotion. The PPV event was held annually in June and was established in 1993 when the promotion was still called the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, renamed WWE in 2002). It centered on the King of the Ring tournament, which had been held annually as a non-televised house show from 1985 to 1991, with the exception of 1990. During the event's run as a PPV, it was considered one of the promotion's five biggest events of the year, along with the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series, dubbed the "Big Five." The 2015 King of the Ring was the 11th and final King of the Ring professional wrestling event held by WWE that featured the 20th King of the Ring tournament. Unlike previous King of the Ring events, which aired on pay-per-view (PPV) from 1993 to 2002, the 2015 event aired exclusively on WWE's livestreaming service, the WWE Network, which made it the first and only King of the Ring event to air on the service. The event featured the semifinals and final of the tournament. The opening round matches were held on the April 27, 2015, episode of ''Raw'', which aired on the USA Network from the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Raw is a brand of the American professional wrestling promotion WWE that was established on March 25, 2002. Brands are divisions of WWE's roster where wrestlers are assigned to perform on a weekly basis when a brand extension is in effect. Wrestlers assigned to Raw primarily appear on the brand's weekly television program, ''Monday Night Raw'', also referred to simply as ''Raw''. The brand extension, also referred to as the brand split, is the separation of the American professional wrestling promotion WWE's roster of wrestlers (and, at various times, creative staff) into distinct divisions, or "brands". WWE Night of Champions was a professional wrestling event produced by WWE, a Connecticut-based professional wrestling promotion. All nine events aired live and were broadcast on pay-per-view (PPV), while the final two events were also available to livestream on the WWE Network. The inaugural event took place on June 24, 2007, and was a crossover with Vengeance titled Vengeance: Night of Champions. In 2008, Vengeance was dropped in favor of Night of Champions and it took over the June PPV slot. The concept of Night of Champions was that every championship promoted on WWE's main roster from 2007 to 2015 was defended. In 2016, Night of Champions was replaced by the similarly themed Clash of Champions.
