King George V Park
King George V Park is a soccer-specific stadium in St. John's, Newfoundland, located at the head of Quidi Vidi Lake in downtown St. John's. The stadium was built in 1925 as the National stadium of Newfoundland. It is the oldest surviving soccer specific stadium in North America, and hosts the Memorial Sea-Hawks soccer teams. History The most famous game played at King George V was on 14 September 1985 when over 13,000 people witnessed Canada's 2–1 victory over Honduras to win the 1985 CONCACAF Championship; the match also qualified Canada for their first World Cup ( Mexico, 1986). Football World Cup 1986
The 1986 FIFA World Cup was the 13th FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial football tournament for men's senior national teams. It was played in Mexico from 31 May to 29 June 1986. The tournament was the second to feature a 24-team format. Colombia had been originally chosen to host the competition by FIFA but, largely due to economic reasons, was not able to do so, and resigned in 1982. Mexico was selected as the new host in May 1983, and became the first country to host the World Cup more than once, after previously hosting in 1970. The World Cup was won by Argentina (their second title, after winning in 1978). Argentina was captained by the 25-year-old Diego Maradona, who played a large part in his team's success by scoring his " Hand of God" goal, as well as another voted "Goal of the Century", in the same quarter-final against England. The Honduras national football team ( es, Selección de fútbol de Honduras) represents Honduras in men's international football. The Canada men's national soccer team (french: Équipe du Canada de soccer masculin) represents Canada in international soccer competitions since 1924. Newfoundland was a British dominion in eastern North America, today the modern Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Quidi Vidi Lake is a long body of water located at the east end of the city of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Local people commonly pronounce its name as ''kiddy viddy''.
