King Country Radio
King Country Radio was a radio station in Taumarunui broadcasting on 1512AM. The station was first started in 1966 broadcasting 1520AM with the call sign 1ZU. The station moved to 1512AM in 1978 after the AM frequency spacing in New Zealand was adjusted from 10 kHz to 9 kHz. Local content on the station was limited to mornings only outside this time the station broadcast 1ZH from Hamilton or National Radio. During the late 1980s and 1990s the station shared air time with Radio Waitomo and on air the station was announced as ''King Country Radio and Radio Waitomo'' all programming originated from King Country studios. In July 1996 the New Zealand Government sold off the commercial arm of Radio New Zealand, the sale included King Country Radio. Taumarunui
Taumarunui is a small town in the King Country of the central North Island of New Zealand. It is on an alluvial plain set within rugged terrain on the upper reaches of the Whanganui River, 65 km south of Te Kuiti and 55 km west of Turangi. It is under the jurisdiction of Ruapehu District and Manawatū-Whanganui region. Its population is as of making it the largest centre for a considerable distance in any direction. It is on State Highway 4 and the North Island Main Trunk railway. The name ''Taumarunui'' is reported to be the dying words of the Māori chief Pehi Turoa – ''taumaru'' meaning screen and ''nui'' big, literally translated as Big Screen, being built to shelter him from the sun, or more commonly known to mean – "The place of big shelter". RNZ National ( mi, Te Reo Irirangi o Aotearoa Ā-Motu), formerly Radio New Zealand National, and known until 2007 as the National Programme or National Radio, is a publicly funded non-commercial New Zealand English-language radio network operated by Radio New Zealand. The Community Radio Network (CRN) was a network of radio stations based in provincial centres across New Zealand. The network was operated by The Radio Network (TRN). Established in June 1998, each radio station in the network retained its local name and broadcast a live breakfast show from the centre in which it was based and then during the day and overnight would pick up the network feed broadcast from Taupo.
