Kimberworth Comprehensive School
Kimberworth Comprehensive School was a comprehensive school in Rotherham, operating from 1914 to 2004. It merged with Old Hall Comprehensive School to form Winterhill School. History The institution opened in September 1914 as a school for 11–14 year olds. The buildings were designed by the Rotherham architect James Knight. It later became a comprehensive school, with the upper age extended to 16. The school closed at the end of the 2003–2004 academic year. The students and many staff transferred to the neighbouring Old Hall Comprehensive School, which was renamed Winterhill School as a result of the amalgamation. Both Winterhill and the nearby Wingfield Business and Enterprise College were rebuilt with extra capacity to accommodate the former Kimberworth students. Since its closure, the building was used as a temporary base for the "Old Hall City Learning Centre". After their departure, the building became derelict and remained empty for a number of years. Rotherham () is a large minster and market town in South Yorkshire, England. The town takes its name from the River Rother which then merges with the River Don. The River Don then flows through the town centre. It is the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. Old Hall Comprehensive School was a comprehensive school located in Kimberworth, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It merged with Kimberworth Comprehensive School to form Winterhill School in September 2004. History The school opened in the 1950s and moved into its own buildings in January 1959. It was originally a secondary modern school, but became a comprehensive school in 1966. The school's buildings were extended in 1973. It gained Technology College status in 1998. Winterhill School
Winterhill School is a Mixed-sex education, mixed secondary school located in Kimberworth, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The school was formed in 2004 by the merger of Old Hall Comprehensive School and the nearby Kimberworth Comprehensive School. It lies on the former site of Old Hall Comprehensive School, Old Hall School, at the corner of High Street and Little Common Lane in Kimberworth. The name of the new school was chosen by pupils and is derived from the “Winter Hills”, a range of hills that lie directly behind the school. These "Winter Hills" were the spoil heaps from the coal-mining operations in the area and were effectively removed by landscaping in 1976. The school retains Old Hall's motto, 'Other People Matter'. In September 2017, the City Learning Centre @ Winterhill has been combined with the school and now contains the visitor entrance. It has been renamed "The Network." Lieutenant Colonel James Edward Knight TD JP, (1867 – 9 June 1930) was an English Architect based in Rotherham. He was the son of Henry John Knight (1837–1899) and Alice Ann Barton (1839–1924). He served in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment, and was promoted to second lieutenant on 25 May 1898 and major on 1 April 1908. It was originally named Wingfield Comprehensive School until September 2006 when it became simply Wingfield School.
