Kim Heacox
Kim Heacox is an American writer and photographer living in Gustavus, Alaska, next to Glacier Bay National Park. He was born in Lewiston, Idaho and grew up in Spokane, Washington. Background Heacox first arrived in Alaska in 1979 as a new park ranger in Glacier Bay National Monument (today Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve). His memoir, ''The Only Kayak'' (2006, a PEN USA Western Book Award finalist), describes that first summer in Alaska. Heacox has authored 15 books, including five published by ''National Geographic''. His novel, ''Jimmy Bluefeather'' (2015), is the only work of fiction in over 20 years to win the National Outdoor Book Award. He has written opinion-editorials for ''The Guardian'', the ''Los Angeles Times'', and the ''Anchorage Daily News''. Gustavus (Tlingit language, Lingít: ''Wanachích T’aak Héen'') () is a second-class City (Alaska), city in Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, Alaska, Hoonah-Angoon Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. The 2020 census population was 655, which represents a 48% increase over the 2010 United States Census, 2010 census of 442 and is one of the fastest growing communities in Alaska. History Gustavus, formerly known as "Strawberry Point", lies on the outwash plain created by the glaciers that once filled Glacier Bay. Two hundred years ago, it was primarily a single large "beach". Glacier Bay National Park And Preserve
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is an American national park located in Southeast Alaska west of Juneau. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the area around Glacier Bay a national monument under the Antiquities Act on February 26, 1925. Chapter 8 Subsequent to an expansion of the monument by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) enlarged the national monument by on December 2, 1980, and created Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Title 2, section 202(1). The national preserve encompasses of public land to the immediate northwest of the park, protecting a portion of the Alsek River with its fish and wildlife habitats, while allowing sport hunting. Glacier Bay became part of a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and was inscribed as a Biosphere Reserve in 1986.
