Kilmeena GAA ( ga, CLG Cill Mhíodhna) is a Gaelic football club associated with the town of Westport in County Mayo, Ireland. History The club was founded in 1889, and first fielded a team against Westport at Kilmeena on 10 March 1889. The club's grounds, Saint Brendan's Park, was opened in 1938, with additional facilities opened subsequently, including a new club house which was opened (by Pat Holmes) in 2000. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Pat Holmes (Gaelic Footballer)
Pat Holmes is an Irish former Gaelic football manager and player. He won a North Mayo Junior Championship in 1986 with Moygownagh. Work commitments caused him to join Castlebar for four years in the early ‘90s where he won Mayo and Connacht club championship medals in 1993. He was very much involved in Mayo's All-Ireland runs in 1996 and 1997 and is the holder of six Connacht Senior Medals, a Connacht U21 Medal and a Hogan Cup Medal. He was captain in 1994 when Mayo lost to Leitrim in the Connacht Final and is a former pupil of St Jarlath's College in Tuam, with whom he won an All-Ireland medal in 1984. He also earned an All Star in 1996. Career He played in defence for the senior Mayo county team from 1988 to 1999 before taking over as manager from 2000 to 2002. All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship
The All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship is a Gaelic football competition which began in 2002 and is played by the junior club champions of each county. Prior to that a number of unofficial competitions were held. The winners of each county's junior football championship compete in four provincial championships. The four provincial winners compete in the All Ireland. Ardfert Gaa, Ardfert, a club from Kerry, made history when they won the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship in 2006 and then won the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football Championship in 2007. Kerry clubs have enjoyed the most success, with ten clubs winning the All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship since its official inauguration in 2004. Mayo Junior Football Championship
The Mayo Junior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by lower-tier Mayo GAA clubs. Islandeady are the title holders (2022) defeating Cill Chomáin in the Final. Honours The trophy presented to the winners is the McDonnell Cup. The winners of the Mayo Junior Championship qualify to represent their county in the Connacht Junior Club Football Championship. They often do well there, with the likes of Kilmeena (January 2022, following 2021 Mayo JFC win), Kilmaine (2019), Louisburgh (2016) and Ardnaree Sarsfields (2015) among the clubs from Mayo to win at least one Connacht Championship after winning the Mayo Junior Football Championship. Former Mayo manager John Maughan was in charge of Lahardane when they won the 2017 Mayo JFC for the first time and then followed it up with a Connacht title, also in 2017.
