Kilgore Drillers
The Kilgore Drillers were a minor league baseball team that played in the Lone Star League from 1947 to 1948 and the East Texas League from 1949 to 1950. Based in Kilgore, Texas, it was the city's last professional baseball team. Joe Kracher managed and played for the team in 1947, 1948 and 1949, leading the club to consecutive league championships in '47 and '48 (the team lost the league finals in '49). Gregg County is a county located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 124,239. Its county seat is Longview. The county is named after John Gregg, a Confederate general killed in action during the American Civil War. Lone Star League
The Lone Star League was the name of three American minor professional baseball leagues located in the state of Texas during the 20th century. The leagues operated from 1927–1929 (as a Class D circuit), 1947–1948 (Class C) and 1977 (Class A). History Each of the three leagues was the result of a reorganization of a previous circuit. The Lone Star League of the 1920s was created by merging two Class D loops, the East Texas League and the Texas Association; it disbanded on May 16, 1929. The eight-member postwar Lone Star circuit of 1947–1948 was formed from a foundation of four teams that had played in the Class C East Texas League of 1946. After the demise of the LSL, the East Texas League was revived for the 1949–1950 seasons. Jerry Fahr
Gerald Warren Fahr (December 9, 1924 – February 12, 2010) was an American professional baseball player, a right-handed pitcher who played in the minor leagues from 1947–1956, with the exception of a five-game Major League trial as a relief pitcher for the Cleveland Indians during the 1951 season. Born in Marmaduke, Arkansas, Fahr made his professional debut with the Vernon Dusters, and played for them for two seasons. In 1947, he had a win-loss record of 16-18, then had a 21-8 record and a 1.96 earned run average (ERA). After spending 1949 with three teams, Fahr played for the Shreveport Sports in 1950, and had a 10-6 record and a 2.72 ERA. At the end of the season, the Cleveland Indians signed him to a contract and added him to the major league roster. Fahr made his Major League debut on April 29, 1951 for the Indians, allowing three hits, a base on balls and two earned runs in one inning against the St. Louis Browns. Merv Connors
Mervin James Connors (January 23, 1914 – January 8, 2006) was a professional baseball player who played 52 games as an infielder in the Major Leagues from 1937 to 1938 for the Chicago White Sox. Hit three home runs in successive at-bats and just missed a fourth in one game in 1938. He accumulated 400 home runs with 1,629 RBI during his career in the minor leagues. He died at age 91 on January 8, 2006, and was interred in Chapel of the Chimes Columbarium and Mausoleum, Oakland, California.
