KidzSearch.com is an American visual child-safe search engine and web portal powered by Google Programmable Search Engine with academic autocomplete that emphasizes safety for children. It uses Google's SafeSearch technology with additional search term filtering for added safety. Search results are customized by pushing age-appropriate content higher up in their search results. Large thumbnails are provided to make results more visual and easier to understand for children. It has many features, including an online encyclopedia with 200,000 articles powered by MediaWiki. The operators of KidzSearch say that it is used in thousands of schools each day, and is visited by some 14 million people a month. KidRex.org is a visual child-safe search engine powered by Google Programmable Search Engine. The website utilizes Google SafeSearch and maintains its own database of inappropriate websites and keywords. Additionally, social media websites are blocked by KidRex. Kidrex Pro is a premium version of the website with more features. Kidrex Pro Is currently being re-imagined into a brand new service. Format The site theme is stylized with colorful hand-drawn crayon and colored marker. Kidrex search results are both colorful and visual, designed for desktop use. The site is not mobile friendly. Looking up a blocked search term used to result in a 404 crayon-stylized error page, and would ask the user to "try again." SafeSearch
SafeSearch is a feature in Google Search and Google Images that acts as an automated filter of pornography and potentially offensive and inappropriate content. On November 11, 2009, Google introduced the ability for users with Google Accounts to lock on the SafeSearch level in Google's web and image searches. Once configured, a password is required to change the setting. On December 12, 2012, Google removed the option to turn off the filter entirely, requiring users to enter more specific search queries to access adult content.
