Khimki ( rus, Химки, p=ˈxʲimkʲɪ) is a city in Moscow Oblast, Russia, 18.25 kilometres northwest of central Moscow, and immediately beyond the Moscow city boundary. History Origins and formation Khimki was initially a railway station that existed since 1850 on the Moscow – Saint Petersburg Railway. The Moskva-Volga Canal was constructed between 1932 and 1937 on which Khimki lies on the west bank. Khimki was then officially founded in 1939. Khimki in the Battle of Moscow The German attack starting the Battle of Moscow (code-named ‘Operation Typhoon’) began on 2 October 1941. The attack on a broad front brought German forces to occupy the village of Krasnaya Polyana (now in the town of Lobnya) to Moscow's North West. Krasnaya Polyana was taken on 30 November. Many sources state that at least one German army patrol visited Khimki. Khimki Forest
Khimki Forest is a forest near the Russian city of Moscow covering about 1000 hectares. It is part of the so-called "Green Belt" around Moscow. An $8 billion high speed road, the Moscow–Saint Petersburg motorway (M11), has been proposed to go through the forest to connect Moscow and Saint Petersburg. For this purpose, part of the forest would have been cut down. The construction triggered large protests, which turned violent in July 2010. On 26 August 2010, President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the construction to be halted. Khimki War Memorial
Khimki War Memorial is a memorial to two Soviet Union, Soviet pilots and four Red Army soldiers in Novoluzhinskoe cemetery, Khimki, Russia. The memorial and the graves were originally located near Leningradskoye Shosse, a major highway leading from Moscow to the international Sheremetyevo Airport. The remains of the pilots and soldiers were exhumed under the sanction of Khimki authorities in April 2007, and reburied later with military honours to a newly built memorial on the Alley of Heroes in the Novoluzhinskoe cemetery, in the centre of Khimki. The Moscow–Saint Petersburg motorway ( rus, Автомагистраль Москва — Санкт-Петербург, Avtomagistral' Moskva-Sankt-Peterburg}), designated as the М11 Neva, is a Russian federal highway in the European part of Russia, running parallel to the M10 highway, serving from the federal cities of Moscow to St. Petersburg. Lobnya (russian: Ло́бня) is a town in Moscow Oblast, Russia, located north west of Moscow. Population: 30,000 (1970). History Lobnya was founded in 1902 and granted town status in 1961. Molzhaninovo Railway Station
Molzhaninovo, formerly Planernaya, is a railway station located on the north side of Khimki on the Moscow-St Petersburg Railway. It serves the Leningradsky suburban railway line. History The platforms were opened in the late 1920s. It was originally called Pervomayskaya, but in 1932 it was renamed for the Osoaviakhim gliding school located nearby. The Moscow Canal (russian: Кана́л и́мени Москвы́), named the Moskva–Volga Canal until 1947, is a canal in Russia that connects the Moskva River with the Volga River.
