Khemradj Kanhai
Khemradj Kanhai (4 June 1912 – 26 November 1988) was a Surinamese politician of the VHP. Kanhai was born in Paramaribo. He studied bookkeeping, but failed his examination. He proceeded to work as a shop assistant at Sauwma, and later he became active in wholesale and retail. Kanhai was also a board member of the Chamber of Commerce. Kanhai was also active in politics as a board member of the 'Hindu Party' that merged in 1949 into the VHP of which he became the treasurer. The National Assembly (''De Nationale Assemblée'', ''The Assembly'', commonly abbreviated "DNA") is the Parliament, representing the legislative branch of government in Suriname. It is a unicameral legislature. The assembly has been situated in the former park house at the Independence Square in Paramaribo, after a fire destroyed the old building of representation on 1 August 1996. A reconstruction of the old building was completed in 2022. The 51 members of parliament are elected every five years by open list proportional representation on the basis of the country's component districts. Sewraam Rambaran Mishre
Sewraam Rambaran Mishre (14 March 1915 – 15 February 1964) was a Surinamese physician and politician who served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Suriname from 30 June 1963 until his death. Biography Rambaran Mishre was born on 14 March 1915 in Nickerie District. He studied at the Geneeskundige School, a free non-academic medical school,. In 1952, he went to the University of Utrecht, and graduated Doctor of Medicine with a specialisation in cardiovascular disease in 1957. Rambaran Mishre was active in politics for the United Hindu Party (later renamed Progressive Reform Party). In 1944, he was appointed to the Estates of Suriname by Governor Johannes Brons. In 1949, he was first elected to the Estates. In 1958, Rambaran Mishre became Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Emanuels cabinet. Jan Kolhoe
Johan Somaroe (Jan) Kolhoe (c. 1918–2003/04) was a member of the Estates of Suriname in the 1950s and 1960s. Kolhoe attended the Paulus school and then embarked on a career in education. From 1941 to 1950 he was a teacher in Curaçao and after that he was a school principal in the district of Nickerie. At the 1955 Surinamese general election he was a shadow candidate for the VHP and three years later the two seats in the Estates of Suriname for the Nickerie district went to the NOP members Poetoe and Kolhoe. Dewnarain Poetoe
Dewnarain Poetoe (1923/24 – 14 December 2012) was a member of the Estates of Suriname during the 1950s and 1960s. Poetoe was born in either 1923 or 1924, and worked as a cashier at a branch of De Surinaamsche Bank in the Nickerie District. On New Year's Eve in 1954 there was a report of a burglary at that branch. It soon became apparent that there was a staged break-in in an attempt to cover up long-standing fraud. Poetoe was identified as the prime suspect and he was arrested. He made a partial confession and in May 1958 he was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison, less 1.5 years in pre-trial detention. At the election a month later, Poetoe was elected as a member of the Estates of Suriname in the Nickerie district as a NOP candidate. The other NOP candidat, Jan Kolhoe, was also elected at the same district. Ramkisoen Dewdat Oedayrajsing Varma
Ramkisoen Dewdat Oedayrajsing Varma (March 1907 – 1968) was a member of the Estates of Suriname for the VHP during the 1950s. Varma was born in Nieuw Nickerie. He studied to become a teacher at a primary school, but did not finish it. He became a priest at the Arya Samay and a trader. In 1950 he officially became an interpreter of Hindustani languages in the Nickerie District and he was also chairman of the van Drimmelenpolder water board. Nickerie District
Nickerie is a district of Suriname, on the north-west coast. Nickerie's capital city is Nieuw-Nickerie. Another town is Wageningen. The district borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Surinamese district of Coronie to the east, the Surinamese district of Sipaliwini to the south and the region of East Berbice-Corentyne in Guyana to the west. Nickerie has a population of 36.639 (2004) and an area of 5,353 km2. Nickerie's population includes East Indian, Javanese, Afro-Surinamese, Chinese, and Europeans. Nickerie is bordered with Guyana.
