Khaprumama Parvatkar
Khaprumama Parvatkar (1879–1953) was a musician from Goa, India who played tabla, as well as ghumot and the sarangi. Well versed in Dhrupad, Khayal and folk goan music forms, he was particularly known for his gifted and phenomenal taal and laya control, with the honorary title of Layabhaskar (laya= rhythm, bhaskar = Sun). Though not very well known amongst the masses, classical musicians of his time critically acclaimed his authority over rhythm and Indian classical percussion instruments. Ghumot
The ghumot (East Indians: घुमट or ಘುಮೋಟ), gumot or ghumat is a membranophone instrument from oa India. ''Ghumat'' is a percussion instrument of earthen vessel having both sides open; on the bigger opening a leather (drum membrane) of monitor lizard is mounted. Generally ghumat is accompanied by ' shamel', another traditional instrument with wooden drum and goat leather mount. This instrument is still very popular amongst by the East Indian people. In August 2019, Goa declared the ghumot as its heritage instrument. Usage Ghumat forms an integral part of Goan folk, religious and temple music, both Hindu and Christian. It serves as an accompaniment to the folk songs and to the mando music. But most importantly it plays a vital role in the music played in Goa during the Ganesh festival. Sarangi
The sārangī is a bowed, short-necked string instrument played in traditional music from South Asia – Punjabi folk music, Rajasthani folk music, and Boro folk music (there known as the ''serja'') – in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. It is said to most resemble the sound of the human voice through its ability to imitate vocal ornaments such as '' gamaks'' (shakes) and '' meends'' (sliding movements). The sarangi (Nepali) is a different instrument, traditional to Nepal. History Sarangi derives its name from the bow of Lord Vishnu and probably as it is played with a bow it is named sarangi. Mogubai Kurdikar
Mogubai Kurdikar (15 July 1904 – 10 February 2001) was a renowned Indian classical vocalist of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. Early years and background Mogubai was born in the village of Kurdi in Portuguese-ruled Goa. Little is known of her father; her mother, Jayashreebai, was known locally as a talented singer. In 1913, when Mogubai was ten years old, her mother took her to the temple at Zambaulim and arranged for a wandering holy man to teach music to Mogubai for a while. Later, she took Mogubai to a traveling theatre company, the Chandreshwar Bhootnāth Sangeet Mandali, and the company took Mogubai in as an actress. While Mogu was with Chandreshwar Bhootnath Mandali (चन्द्रेश्वर भूतनाथ मंडळी), her mother died in 1914. Kishori Amonkar
Kishori Amonkar (10 April 1932 – 3 April 2017) was a leading Indian classical vocalist, belonging to the Jaipur ''gharana'', or a community of musicians sharing a distinctive musical style. She was a performer of the classical genre ''khyal'' and the light classical genres ''thumri'' and '' bhajan''. Amonkar trained under her mother, classical singer Mogubai Kurdikar also from the Jaipur ''gharana'', but she experimented with a variety of vocal styles in her career. Career Training Amonkar's initial training in music was by her mother, the classical vocalist Mogubai Kurdikar. She has stated in an interview that her mother was an exacting teacher, initially teaching her by singing phrases and making Amonkar repeat them.
