Kevin Whitrick
Kevin Neil Whitrick (17 August 1964 – 21 March 2007) was a British electrical engineer. Whitrick's death was highly publicised for his live, online webcast suicide. Biography Background Whitrick had been married to his wife Paula since 1988, and they had two children. At the time of his death, the marriage had broken down about two years prior, and he was living separately from his family. In 2006, Whitrick was severely injured in a car accident and suffered long-term health consequences. Suicide On the day of his death, Whitrick was in a chat room on PalTalk and was joined by about 60 other users in a special "insult" chatroom where people " have a go at each other". He stood on a chair, punched a hole in his ceiling and placed a rope around a joist, then tied the other end around his neck and stepped off the chair. On August 31, 2020, Ronnie McNutt, a 33-year-old American man, committed suicide by shooting himself under the chin with a single shot rifle on a Facebook livestream, which went viral on social media platforms. The case became notable for both the callous attitude expressed towards McNutt's death by some internet users, as well as Facebook's slow response to the video, which had been shared to numerous other platforms and amassed a large view count before finally being taken down. Video platform TikTok was also slow to respond to the video, which had appeared in many user feeds and constant re-uploads, leading to many users choosing to boycott the platform.
