Kevin McCarthy (virologist)
Kevin Owen McCarthy (born January 26, 1965) is an American politician who is the List of Speakers of the United States House of Representatives, 55th and current speaker of the United States House of Representatives, serving since January 7, 2023. A member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party, he served as House Minority Leader from 2019 to 2023 and as House Majority Leader from 2014 to 2019 under speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan. McCarthy is in his ninth House term, serving as the U.S. representative for California's 22nd congressional district from 2007 to 2013, the California's 23rd congressional district, 23rd district from 2013 to 2023 and the California's 20th congressional district, 20th district since 2023. Speaker Of The United States House Of Representatives
The speaker of the United States House of Representatives, commonly known as the speaker of the House, is the presiding officer of the United States House of Representatives. The office was established in 1789 by Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution. The speaker is the political and parliamentary leader of the House and is simultaneously its presiding officer, ''de facto'' leader of the body's majority party, and the institution's administrative head. Speakers also perform various other administrative and procedural functions. Given these several roles and responsibilities, the speaker usually does not personally preside over debates. That duty is instead delegated to members of the House from the majority party. Nor does the speaker regularly participate in floor debates.
