Kevin McCarthy is an American television director. Career He is best known as the director of the syndicated game show ''Jeopardy!'', and before that, he served as the show's associate director from the start in 1984 until taking the main director position in 1992 (replacing Dick Schneider), a role in which he held for 26 years until the end of the 2017–18 season, when he announced his retirement on June 26, 2018. He was replaced by Clay Jacobsen. He also directed ''Jeopardy!'s'' spin-off programs ''Rock & Roll Jeopardy!'' on VH1 and ''Sports Jeopardy!'' on Crackle, and co-directed another Merv Griffin-created game show, '' Click''. Awards McCarthy has been nominated 21 times for ''Jeopardy!'' in the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show, and won the award 8 times. |

Broadcast syndication is the practice of leasing the right to broadcasting television shows and radio programs to multiple television stations and radio stations, without going through a broadcast network. ''Jeopardy!'' is an American game show created by Merv Griffin. The show is a quiz competition that reverses the traditional question-and-answer format of many quiz shows. ''Rock & Roll Jeopardy!'' is an American television game show, created by Scott Sternberg, and adapted from the quiz show ''Jeopardy!'', created by Merv Griffin. The show debuted on VH1 on August 8, 1998 and ran for four seasons, ending on October 20, 2001. Hosted by Jeff Probst, this version featured largely identical play to the parent program, but highlighted post-1950s popular music trivia rather than focusing on general knowledge. Hosted by Dan Patrick, this version featured largely identical play to the parent program, but highlights sports trivia instead of general knowledge. Crackle, formerly called Grouper and Sony Crackle, is a free video streaming service supported by advertisements that was founded in 2004. Mervyn Edward Griffin Jr. (July 6, 1925 – August 12, 2007) was an American television show host and media mogul. He began his career as a radio and big band singer, later appearing in film and on Broadway. From 1965 to 1986 he hosted his own talk show, ''The Merv Griffin Show''. He also created the game shows ''Jeopardy!'' and ''Wheel of Fortune'' through his production companies, Merv Griffin Enterprises and Merv Griffin Entertainment. The Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Game Show was an award presented annually by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) and Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). It was given in honor of a game show that features "contestants, either alone or as part of a team, who play a game involving answering questions or solving problems for money and/or prizes". Programs that have aired at least 15 original episodes for the calendar year are eligible to enter. In 2020, a category requirement has changed, lowering the number of required original episodes from fifteen to eight.
