Keurboom Park
Keurboom Park is a park in Rondebosch, Cape Town, in South Africa. It borders the and Rondebosch Boys' High School. It is named after the original Keurboom estate. It has two children's play areas within it, in addition to open air exercise equipment, dog friendly open areas, and ponds and streams for local wildlife. This includes a seasonal frog and dog pond. It is locally known for its sweeping views of Table Mountain, and for being a child and dog friendly park. The keurboom is an indigenous tree known for its very fast growth and pink flowers. In 2003 a planting program to plant keurboom trees in the park began with the planting of twelve trees on Arbor Day. By 2007 over 200 trees had been planted. Since 2019 the park has hosted an annual family market in November. ''Virgilia'' is a genus of Southern African trees in the family Fabaceae that is known for its very fast growth (4.5m in 2 years) and a tendency to fall over as it matures (15 years or so). The common name in South Africa (in Afrikaans) is keurboom, meaning 'choice tree'. Valued as useful ornamental trees by gardeners, the genus's two species are also known as tree-in-a-hurry, cape lilac, blossom tree and pink blossom tree. Taxonomy The genus was described by Jean Louis Marie Poiret and published in Encyclopédie Méthodique in 1808. Most botanists feel that the two species are simply forms and should be lumped under one species, ''Virgilia oroboides''. That would mean that the current ''V. divaricata'' is simply a darker form limited to the forested region of Knysna, South Africa. Rondebosch is one of the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa. It is primarily a residential suburb, with shopping and business districts as well as the main campus of the University of Cape Town. History Four years after the first Dutch settlement at the Cape in 1652, the first experimental crops were grown along the banks of the Liesbeek River (at that stage called the Amstel or Versse Rivier). Rondebosch Boys' High School is a public English medium high school for boys situated in the suburb of Rondebosch in Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is one of the topmost academic schools in South Africa and one of the oldest schools in the country, having been established in 1897. Table Mountain
Table Mountain ( naq, Huriǂoaxa, lit= sea-emerging; af, Tafelberg) is a flat-topped mountain forming a prominent landmark overlooking the city of Cape Town in South Africa. It is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top. Table Mountain National Park is the most visited national park in South Africa, attracting 4.2 million people every year for various activities. Arbor Day (or Arbour in some countries) is a secular day of observance in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees. Today, many countries observe such a holiday. 2012 African Cross Country Championships
The 2nd African Cross Country Championships was an international cross country running competition for African athletes which was held on 18 March 2012 in Cape Town's Keurboom Park in South Africa. Organised by the Confederation of African Athletics and Athletics South Africa, it was the first time that the competition represented that year's foremost event in the sport, as the IAAF World Cross Country Championships was not held. Twenty-one nations entered athletes into the event and 160 runners participated in the races. There were four championship races held at the event, featuring senior and junior races for men and women. The senior races were won by Kenyan athletes for a second year running, with Clement Langat and Joyce Chepkirui taking the men's and women's titles, respectively. Kenya also won the women's junior race through Faith Kipyegon, while Ethiopia took the men's junior title as Muktar Edris won that race.
