Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia
Ketch Harbour is a rural fishing and residential community on the Chebucto Peninsula in the Halifax Regional Municipality on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean on Route 349, 17 kilometers from Halifax. It is currently inhabited by people who, for the most part, commute to Halifax and its surrounding areas to work. The community attained ownership of the government wharf in 1999 and since that time have worked to maintain public access to the harbour for the community. Ketch Harbour established a residents association at the same time to ensure its long term sustainability. Settlement History The community has been an important fishing spot for well over two hundred years. It is situated close to the City of Halifax at a time when most travelled by boat. A fisherman's catch could be easily transported to Halifax by water for sale in the city's markets. Duncans Cove is a small rural community on the Chebucto Peninsula in the Halifax Regional Municipality on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean on the Ketch Harbour Road ( Route 349), 19 kilometers from Halifax. The community is located beside Chebucto Head, the prominent coastal headland. History The original Mi'kmaw name for Duncans Cove is Uni'knitujk (translated as "Little Portage"). Duncans Cove was first settled by Europeans as a small fishing community. The first recorded settler in Duncans Cove was Simon Duntoyn in 1752. Other families followed including the Crab, Full, Leonard and McNab families. John McNab was granted in 1859. The cove was named after Admiral Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan who defeated the Dutch at the Battle of Camperdown. West Pennant is a rural community located at the head of Pennant Harbour near Sambro on the Chebucto Peninsula in the Halifax Regional Municipality Nova Scotia on Route 349 West Pennant is an old fishing community that sits on Fawson and Long Coves that open into Pennant Harbour. Sambro, Nova Scotia
Sambro is a rural fishing community on the Chebucto Peninsula in the Halifax Regional Municipality, in Nova Scotia, Canada. Located on the Atlantic Ocean at the head of Sambro Harbour, the community is immediately west of the entrance to Halifax Harbour. Sambro is located at the end of Route 306. Sambro Island is located within the community southeast of the harbour and is home to the Sambro Island Lighthouse, the oldest operational lighthouse in the Americas (since 1758). It stands 62 feet on the top of the rocky island. The original lens from the lighthouse is on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax.
