Pádraig Kennelly
Pádraig Kennelly (10 February 1929 – 21 May 2011) was an Irish journalist, editor, photographer, cameraman and publisher, who co-founded and edited the '' Kerry's Eye'' newspaper. Kennelly originally began his career as a pharmacist. His interest in photography led him to pursue a career in photojournalism with his wife, Joan Kennelly. Together, Pádraig and Joan Kennelly took more than 500,000 photographs of daily life in County Kerry between 1953 and 1973. The photographs were subsequently digitised and published as a book. The collection was permanently collected into the Kennelly Archive, which was launched in 2009. In 1974, Pádraig and Joan co-founded the '' Kerry's Eye'' in the basement of their home on Ashe Street in Tralee, County Kerry. He remained the paper's editor until his retirement in 2010. Thomas Crosbie Holdings (TCH) was a family-owned media and publishing group based in Cork, Ireland. Its largest publication was once the ''Irish Examiner'', the third largest daily broadsheet newspaper in the Republic of Ireland. Radio Kerry is a full-service, licensed radio station that operates from the franchise area of County Kerry in Southwest Ireland. Radio Kerry was established in 1989 and began broadcasting on 14 July 1990. The station headquarters are in Tralee, the principal town of County Kerry, with a remote studio in Killarney. The original studios were based at Park View, Tralee, New Street, Killarney and The Barracks, Cahersiveen. In April 1995, Radio Kerry HQ moved to a custom-designed building in Tralee town centre with digital broadcasting, production and editing facilities incorporating a television studio. Joan Kennelly (died 2007) was an Irish photographer, photojournalist and founder of the regional newspaper, ''Kerry's Eye''. Kennelly and her husband, Pádraig Kennelly, took more than 500,000 photographs of daily life in County Kerry between 1953 and 1973. The collection has been digitized and published as the Kennelly Archive in 2009. Joan and Pádraig Kennelly co-founded the ''Kerry's Eye'' newspaper in the basement of their home on Ashe Street in Tralee, County Kerry, in 1974. In May 2011, an exhibition of the Kennellys' photographs documenting the visit of Charles de Gaulle and his wife, Yvonne de Gaulle, to Ireland in 1969 opened at the Irish Cultural Institute in Paris, France. Many of the most famous photographs on display were taken by Joan Kennelly. These included a photo of Charles de Gaulle standing over a kneeling congregation at a mass in Sneem, County Kerry.
