The KTM Class 22 is a class of mainline diesel electric locomotives designed and equipped by GEC Traction, English Electric-AEI Traction, with construction by Metro-Cammell, for operations by Keretapi Tanah Melayu in Malaysia. Description The class 22 is a dual cab general purpose locomotive with a full width body. The body is a single stress-carrying truss structure designed for a buffing load of . It consists of a basic underframe of rolled channel longitudinal side members connected by cross members at bogie, power unit and equipment mounting points, as well as at buffer beams and drag boxes. Sides consist of fabricated frames with steel panelling welded to the underframe. The prefabricated cabs are also welded to the underframe and sides to form the box structure. Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) (Jawi: كريتاڤي تانه ملايو برحد) or Malayan Railways Limited is the main rail operator in Peninsular Malaysia. The railway system dates back to the British colonial era, when it was first built to transport tin. Previously known as the Federated Malay States Railways (FMSR) and the Malayan Railway Administration (MRA), Keretapi Tanah Melayu acquired its current name in 1962. Whyalla was founded as "Hummocks Hill", and was known by that name until 1916. Co-Co Locomotives
Co-Co is the wheel arrangement for diesel or electric locomotives with two six-wheeled bogies with all axles powered, with a separate traction motor per axle. The equivalent UIC classification (Europe) for this arrangement is Co′Co′, or C-C for AAR (North America). Use Co-Cos are most suited to freight work as the extra wheels give them good traction. They are also popular because the greater number of axles results in a lower axle load to the track. History The first mainline diesel-electric locomotives were of Bo-Bo arrangement. As they grew in power and weight, from 1937 the EMD E-units used an A1A-A1A layout with six axles to reduce axle load, but only four of them were powered.
