Keoratola Crematorium
Keoratola crematorium or Keoratola Burning Ghat or Shahnagar Keoratola crematorium is a crematory located at Tollygunge Road, Kalighat, Kolkata. This is one of the largest cremation grounds in Kolkata. History Before the establishment of this crematorium, there was a jungle of Caraway trees and the area was named as Keoratala. This crematorium was established in 1862 beside the bank of Adi Ganga. Keoratala crematorium was modernised by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, Ex- Chief minister of West Bengal. Uttam Kumar ( bn, উত্তম কুমার; born Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay; 3 September 1926 – 24 July 1980), popularly known as the Mahanayak, was an Indian actor, producer, director, Screenwriter, script writer, composer, and singer who predominantly worked in Cinema of West Bengal, Bengali cinema. Cremation is a method of final disposition of a dead body through burning. Cremation may serve as a funeral or post-funeral rite and as an alternative to burial. In some countries, including India and Nepal, cremation on an open-air pyre is an ancient tradition. Nimtala Crematorium
Nimtala Crematorium is located on Beadon Street, Kolkata, India. The crematorium is also historically known as Nimtala burning ghat, or simply Nimtala ghat. Located on the banks of Hoogly ( Ganga) it is considered to be one of the holiest burning ghats in the country where the soul is said to attain moksha , ie. breaking the cycle of birth and death. So people across the country comes here for the cremation of their loved ones. It is also one of the largest burning ghats in the country, being located in Kolkata. History The first building of this burning ghat came up in 1717, but cremation was done almost 2000 years before that time. Subrata Mukherjee
Subrata Mukherjee (14 June 1946 – 4 November 2021) was an Indian politician who was cabinet minister of the government of West Bengal and sitting member of West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He was a member of All India Trinamool Congress. He was also the 35th Mayor of Kolkata from 2000 to 2005. Subhas Chakraborty (18 March 1942 – 3 August 2009) was an Indian politician belonged to Communist Party of India (Marxist) who served as Minister of Transport, Sports and Youth Services in the Government of West Bengal. Sunil Gangopadhyay
Sunil Gangopadhyay or Sunil Ganguly (7 September 1934 – 23 October 2012) was an Indian poet, historian and novelist in the Bengali language based in the city of Kolkata. He is a former Sheriff of Calcutta. Gangopadhyay obtained his master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta. In 1953 he and a few of his friends started a Bengali poetry magazine, '' Krittibas''. Later he wrote for many different publications. Suchitra Sen ( ; born as Roma Dasgupta (; 6 April 1931 – 17 January 2014) was an Indian actress who worked in Bengali and Hindi cinema. Kalighat
Kalighat is a locality of Kolkata, in Kolkata district, West Bengal, India. One of the oldest neighbourhoods in South Kolkata, Kalighat is also densely populated — with a history of cultural intermingling with the various foreign incursions into the area over time.
