Kenya At The 2011 World Championships In Athletics
Kenya competed at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics from August 27 to September 4 in Daegu, South Korea. Team selection After the final day of the National Bank of Kenya National Athletics Championships, Athletics Kenya (AK) named 48 athletes for the competition. Only a sprinkle of new faces made the provisional Daegu roster that is fronted by three Olympic champions (Asbel Kiprop, Brimin Kipruto, and Nancy Langat) and all the four gold winners (Abel Kirui, Ezekiel Kemboi, Vivian Cheruiyot, and Linet Masai) the country minted in Berlin two years ago. Among the fresh names will be unheralded Hellen Obiri who caused the biggest upsets of the day when she scorched Olympic champion, Nancy Jebet Lagat at the homestretch in the women’s 1500m. No field athlete made the Kenyan World Championships squad. Jackson Mumbwa Kivuva (born August 11, 1989) is a runner from Kenya who specialises in 800 metres. His surname is sometimes misspelled as "Kivuna". Kivuva started running in 2002 while at Syanamu Primary school. Vincent Kipruto
Vincent Kipruto Limo (born 13 September 1987) is a Kenyan long distance runner who specialises in the marathon. He made his debut in the event in 2008 and won the Paris Marathon a year later. He then placed top three at the Chicago Marathon and the Rotterdam Marathon (where he ran a personal best of 2:05:13 hours). In his first international appearance he won the silver medal at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. He won the 2013 Lake Biwa Marathon and Frankfurt Marathon. Silas Kiplagat
Silas Kiplagat (born 20 August 1989) is a Kenyan middle-distance runner who specialises in the 1500 metres. He has a personal best of 3:27.64 minutes, which makes him the fifth fastest of all-time over the distance. Born in Siboh Village, Marakwet District, he started training in seriousness for competitive running in 2008 after completing Chebara high school in Marakwet district. He met Sammy Kitwara and the professional trained with him and introduced him to his coach, Moses Kiptanui, a three-time world champion in the steeplechase. Edna Kiplagat
Edna Ngeringwony Kiplagat (born 15 November 1979) is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner. She was the 2011 and 2013 World Champion in the marathon. She established herself as an elite marathon runner with wins at the Los Angeles and New York City Marathons in 2010. Her personal best for the distance is 2:19:50 hours, set at the London Marathon in 2012. At age 37, Kiplagat won the 2017 Boston Marathon in a time of 2:21:52 hours, and won the marathon silver medal at the IAAF World Championships in London. At age 39, she was second at the 2019 Boston Marathon and fourth in the event at the following World Championships. The Women's 10,000 metres at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on August 27. Kenya entered a strong team including the 2009 champion Linet Masai, the reigning 5000 metres world champion Vivian Cheruiyot, and Sally Kipyego – the fastest 10,000 m runner that year. The Women's 5000 metres at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on August 30, and September 2. Vivian Cheruiyot entered the competition as the reigning 2009 World Champion, the 2011 World Cross Country Champion, the Diamond League leader, and the fastest woman of the year (having become the fourth fastest ever with a run of 14:20.87 minutes). Ethiopians Meseret Defar and Sentayehu Ejigu had run the next quickest that season. The top twelve ranked runners prior to the championships were all either Kenyan or Ethiopian; Linet Masai, Sylvia Kibet, Mercy Cherono and Genzebe Dibaba were the other contenders from the two dominant countries. The Men's 3000 metres steeplechase event at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on August 29 & September 1. The final was a slow race with Ugandans Jacob Araptany and Benjamin Kiplagat controlling the pace, with three Kenyans immediately behind. As the last lap began, Kiplagat fell back but Araptany led until one barrier before the water jump. There Ezekiel Kemboi blasted past, with Brimin Kipruto in tow. Kemboi had such a substantial lead coming off the last barrier, he started celebrating and drifted out to lane 7 where he finished. His post race, shirtless celebration dance was one of the most exuberant in recent memory, rivaling some celebrations normally performed by sprinters. Araptany faded at the finish, passed by Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad for the bronze. The Men's 1500 metres at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on August 30 and September 1 & 3. In the heats, Mehdi Baala, who has a history of this sort of incident, fell flat on his face as the final sprint began. He was eventually advanced by the referees to the semi-finals, where he qualified for the final. The first semi-final went out slowly and was a strategic race with a bunch finish. Defending champion Yusuf Saad Kamel finished 6th in that semi and failed to make the time qualifier. The second semi went out on a decidedly faster pace bringing the time qualifiers along with the automatic qualifiers. Previous silver medalist Deresse Mekonnen was left behind in the final kick. The Men's 800 metres at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on August 27, 28 and 30. The first semi-final went out fast, with a bunch finish. While Abubaker Kaki came into the event as one of the favorites, he had to qualify to the final by time as the fastest 3rd place. Both time qualifiers came from the first semi. The second semi was the opposite kind of race as kickers Nick Symmonds and Yuriy Borzakovskiy almost acted as a team to run from the front and slow the pace. The two almost formed a wall down the home stretch that frustrated the runners behind them, achieving the two slowest qualifying times into the final.
