Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers Men's Basketball
The Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers men's basketball team represents Kentucky Wesleyan College, a private college of less than 1000 students located in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Panthers, a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), have won eight NCAA Division II championships, most recently in 2001 and dating back to 1966. Joel Utley has been the "voice of the Panthers" since the 1962 season (including all eight championships), and calls all the Wesleyan basketball games on local Owensboro radio station WBIO. Kentucky Wesleyan College
Kentucky Wesleyan College (KWC) is a private Methodist college in Owensboro, Kentucky. The college is known for its liberal arts programs. Fall 2018 enrollment was 830 students. History Kentucky Wesleyan College was founded in 1858 by the Kentucky Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was originally located in Millersburg. Classes began in 1866 and the first commencement took place in 1868. At first, it was a training school for preachers but soon business and liberal arts classes were added to the curriculum. In 1890 the school was moved to Winchester and soon after women began to be admitted for the first time. Walter R. "Rip" Van Winkle (May 6, 1900 – January 6, 1994) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College, when its campus was located in Winchester, Kentucky, from 1928 to 1930, compiling a record of 13–11–3. Van Winkle was also the head basketball coach, head baseball coach, and athletic director at Kentucky Wesleyan. A native of London, Kentucky, Van Winkle played football, basketball, and baseball at Kentucky Wesleyan and Minor League Baseball with the Winchester Dodgers of the Blue Grass League. Basil Hayden
Basil Ewing Hayden (May 19, 1899 – January 9, 2003) was an American college basketball player and coach. A Kentucky native, he began playing the sport in the sixth grade and, after a year at Transylvania University, transferred to the University of Kentucky to study chemistry and play on the school's basketball squad. He captained the team to victory at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship and was named an All-American for his efforts – the first basketball player to earn the honor at the University of Kentucky. After graduating in 1922 Hayden took on a number of different jobs and was called to coach the University of Kentucky's basketball team in 1926 following the departure of Ray Eklund. After a 3–13 record in his first year he was replaced with John Mauer and returned to his previous occupations.
