Kentucky Cup Distaff Stakes
The Kentucky Cup Distaff Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky. The Grade III event is run near the end of the fall meet and is open to fillies and mares aged three and older. Contested on Polytrack synthetic dirt at a distance of one and one-sixteenth miles, the race offered a purse of $100,000 in 2008. Before 2008, the race was part of the Breeders' Cup Stakes Program and carried $75,000 in additional purse money from the Breeders' Cup Fund. Until 2007 the race was called the Turfway Breeders' Cup Stakes. With the support of WinStar Farm, this race which was suspended in 2010 due to economic challenges, will return in 2011. Turfway Park
Turfway Park is an American horse racing track located within the city limits of Florence, Kentucky, about south of the Ohio River at Cincinnati. The track conducts live Thoroughbred horse racing during two meets each year—Holiday (December), and Winter/Spring (January to late March/early April)—and offers year-round simulcast wagering from tracks across the continent. In 2009, the Horseplayers Association of North America introduced a rating system for (currently) 62 Thoroughbred racetracks in North America. In 2016, Turfway was ranked #11. History and information Turfway Park opened in Florence, Kentucky, in 1959 as Latonia Race Course. The track is located about 10 miles south of the original Latonia Race Track in Covington, Kentucky, which hosted Thoroughbred racing from 1883 until it was torn down in 1939. Willie Martinez (jockey)
Willie Martinez (born March 3, 1971) is a jockey in North American Thoroughbred horse racing. Martinez is known in the business as "Chillie Willie," because of his "chill" demeanor in riding. Background Martinez was born in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico, but emigrated to the United States in 1988 to work as a hotwalker and groom for his sister's godfather at Finger Lakes Race Track in Farmington, New York. Riding career Mrtinez began riding professionally in 1989 and got his first win that year at Tampa Bay Downs. In 1997, at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, he rode Cryptocloser to victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown series. Reade Baker
Reade Baker (born April 30, 1947, in Port Dalhousie, Ontario) is a retired trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses who was voted the 2005 Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer in Canada and who in 2018 was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. During his career Reade Baker trained horses that won 13 National Championships of which two earned Canadian Horse of the Year honors. Eurico Rosa Da Silva
Eurico Rosa da Silva (born June 29, 1975, in Buri, São Paulo, Brazil) is a retired Thoroughbred racing jockey who raced for five years in his native Brazil and another four years in Macau before coming to Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. While based in Canada, he also won races in the United States. Silva got his first Canadian Triple Crown win in 2009 when he rode Eye of the Leopard to victory in the Queen's Plate, and won that race again in 2010 aboard Big Red Mike. Among his other successes, in 2016 he won the Woodbine Oaks, riding Neshama. In 2017, he won the Canadian International Stakes riding Bullards Alley. Garrett Gomez
Garrett Keith Gomez (January 1, 1972 – December 14, 2016) was an American Thoroughbred jockey who won two Eclipse Awards and thirteen Breeders' Cup races during his career. Racing career Early career Gomez learned to ride by watching his father, Louie, who was a jockey at many tracks in the Southwest United States. When Gomez was in the tenth grade, he dropped out of school to start his career as a jockey, and began riding at Santa Fe Downs in New Mexico in September 1988, picking up his first victory at that venue aboard Furlong Circle. After a stint riding on the California Fair Circuit, Gomez switched his tack to the Midwest and rode at Ak-Sar-Ben and Fonner Park in Nebraska. Corey James Lanerie (born November 13, 1974) is a jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. Based in Kentucky, he has been the leading rider at Churchill Downs, having won the most races during a race meet, 10 times. He has also been named the leading rider at Ellis Park, Lone Star Park, Sam Houston Race Park and Retama Park. Lanerie was born in Lafayette, Louisiana.
