Kenny Mellman
Kenneth Mellman is an American musician and cabaret artist. He is a member of The Julie Ruin. Mellman is co-creator of Kiki and Herb with Justin Bond and plays the role of Herb. He created his solo show ''Kenny Mellman Is Grace Jones'' and co-wrote the show ''At Least It's Pink'' with Bridget Everett and Michael Patrick King. Mellman performed with The Three Terrors (Stephin Merritt, LD Beghtol and Dudley Klute). He played piano for Bob Mould's vocal on "He Didn't", a track on The 6ths' album ''Hyacinths and Thistles''. Kiki And Herb
Kiki and Herb (Justin Bond and Kenny Mellman) are an American drag cabaret duo. Bond portrays Kiki DuRane, an aging, alcoholic, female lounge singer. Mellman portrays her gay, male piano accompanist, known only as "Herb." Despite Bond and Mellman being middle aged, their Kiki and Herb characters are, according to their elaborate fictional biographies, more than eighty years old. Both performers live in New York City, but the pair have performed from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., as well as Europe. The act alternates between musical numbers and long, seemingly inebriated monologues by Kiki. The musical numbers, often medleys, draw on an enormous range of popular music, from Broadway musicals to Nirvana and from Britney Spears to REO Speedwagon. The Julie Ruin
The Julie Ruin is an American band formed in 2010 in New York City. The band rehearses in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and records at Oscilloscope and Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn. Band members include Carmine Covelli, Sara Landeau, Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox, and Kenny Mellman. In December 2010, the Julie Ruin previewed a performance at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York. In 2012, the Julie Ruin released the song "Girls Like Us," featuring queercore artist Vaginal Davis, as a free download as part of a series inspired by the book ''Real Man Adventures'' by T. Cooper. Justin Bond
Justin Vivian Bond (born May 9, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and actor. Described as "the best cabaret artist of heir!-- MOS:GENDERID --> generation" and a "tornado of art and activism", they first achieved prominence under the pseudonym of Kiki DuRane in the stage duo Kiki and Herb, an act born out of a collaboration with long-time co-star Kenny Mellman. With a musical voice self-described as "kind of woody and full with a lot of vibration", Bond is a Tony-nominated (2007) performer who has received GLAAD (2000), Obie (2001), Bessie (2004), Ethyl (2007), and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists (2012) awards. Michael Patrick King (born September 14, 1954) is an American director, writer, and producer. He is best known for directing and writing for ''Sex and the City'' and its film adaptations, and for co-creating the television comedies '' The Comeback'', '' 2 Broke Girls'', and ''AJ and the Queen''. Life and career King was born to Roman Catholic Irish-American family in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He attended Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania, for three years. In 1975, King moved to New York, did comedy, and wrote plays. He also was a member of a comedy improv group called The Broadway Local which mostly performed at Manhattan Punch Line Theatre. LD Beghtol
LD Beghtol (1964 – 2020), also known as "Uncle LD", was an American musician, art director and writer. He was best known for participating in The Magnetic Fields' ''69 Love Songs'' and writing the illustrated companion book ''69 Love Songs, A Field Guide'' for the 33 1/3 book series. Beghtol was born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was a founding member of the band Flare—aka Flare Acoustic Arts League—and the death-pop outfit LD & the New Criticism, and was also in the collective, Moth Wranglers. In 2012 Beghtol formed LD&CO, with Scott Sosebee ( Little Red Rocket) and others to record and play live; their debut single "Morgantown" was mixed by Kramer, but remains unreleased. Robert Arthur Mould (born October 16, 1960) is an American musician, principally known for his work as guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for alternative rock bands Hüsker Dü in the 1980s and Sugar in the 1990s. Early years Born in Malone, New York, Mould lived in several places, including the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, where he attended Macalester College. The 6ths
The 6ths is a band created by Stephin Merritt, also the primary songwriter and instrumentalist behind The Magnetic Fields, The Gothic Archies, and Future Bible Heroes. One story has it that the band was conceived when Merritt, observing that there was no tribute album dedicated to him, decided to make one himself. In the group, Merritt writes and plays songs which are then sung by other artists—a different artist on each track. It has so far produced two well-received albums and many different collaborations. Releases The two albums the band released to date are ''Wasps' Nests'' in 1995 ( Factory Too via London Records) and ''Hyacinths and Thistles'' in 1999. ''Wasps' Nests'' was preceded by a 7" vinyl single of album track "Heaven in a Black Leather Jacket" in 1993 on Merge Records that contains a B-side, "Rot in the Sun", sung by Merritt himself.
