Kenny Bass
Kenny Bass (1922 – 1987), born Peter Bastasic Jr., was the Dean of Cleveland-Style polka broadcasters, and led the Kenny Bass Polka Poppers Orchestra. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radio man in the Pacific. He was awarded three Battle Stars and a Purple Heart and then started his broadcasting career in 1948 on station WSRS. His show was America’s first daily polka show. Bands From 1945 until 1950, he was a member of the Sokach-Habat Tune mixers. He formed the Polka Poppers in 1950, which was one of the most prolific polka recording orchestras. They made 17 albums and had more than 200 singles. They had their own television shows in 1954 and 1960 and had guest appearances on ''Polka Varieties,'' and the ''Old Dutch Polka Revue.'' Polka is a dance and genre of dance music originating in nineteenth-century Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. Battle Stars
A service star is a miniature bronze or silver five-pointed star inch (4.8 mm) in diameter that is authorized to be worn by members of the eight uniformed services of the United States on medals and ribbons to denote an additional award or service period. The service star may also be referred to as a campaign star or battle star depending on which award the star is authorized for and the manner in which the device is used for the award. Service stars, campaign stars, and battle stars are worn with one point of the star pointing up on the suspension ribbon of a medal or service ribbon. Purple Heart
The Purple Heart (PH) is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after 5 April 1917, with the U.S. military. WSRS (96.1 FM) – branded 96-1 SRS – is a commercial radio station licensed to Worcester, Massachusetts, and serving Central Massachusetts. Owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., the transmitter site and studios are located in the Worcester suburb of Paxton. "One potato, two potato" (sometimes "One potato, two potatoes") is a traditional children's counting-out rhyme with accompanying hand actions. It has a Roud number of 19230. National Cleveland Style Polka Hall Of Fame
The National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and Museum is a museum in Euclid, Ohio, United States. It traces the history of the Cleveland-style polka, from its Slovenian roots from the 19th century, through American factory and mining towns where it absorbed jazz and country expressions, to the post-war years when top ten polka hits got the nation on the dance floor. Awards show The Polka Hall of Fame holds an annual awards show on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, during the three-day Thanksgiving Polka Weekend at the Holiday Inn Cleveland South in Independence, Ohio.
