Kenneth P. MacLeod
Kenneth Parker MacLeod Sr. (February 14, 1923 - October 23, 2001) was an American politician from Maine. A Republican, MacLeod served one term (1962-1964) in the Maine House of Representatives and 4 terms (1966-1974) in Maine Senate, including 3 terms as President of the Maine Senate. Growing up in Brewer, Maine, MacLeod represented his district in the Maine Legislature. In 1964, he ran for U.S. Congress as the Republican nominee and lost. Maine Republican Party
The Maine Republican Party is an affiliate of the United States Republican Party in Maine. It was founded in Strong, Maine, on August 7, 1854. The party currently does not control the governor's office or either chamber of the Maine Legislature, nor either of Maine's two U.S. House seats and only controls one of the state's U.S. Senate seats. Party history The Republican Party formed in Maine in 1854 due to Prohibition and the abolitionist movement. Hannibal Hamlin left the Democratic Party because of the slavery issue and helped form the Republican Party. He was the state's first Republican governor. In 1860, he became the first Republican vice president after Abraham Lincoln won the presidency. From the 1860s until 1900, James G. Blaine rose as a dominant Republican figure. Skowhegan () is the county seat of Somerset County, Maine. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 8,620. Every August, Skowhegan hosts the annual Skowhegan State Fair, the oldest continuously-held state fair in the United States. Skowhegan was originally inhabited by the indigenous Abenaki people who named the area Skowhegan, meaning "watching place or fish" and were mostly dispersed by the end of the 4th Anglo-Abenaki War.
