Kennard F. Bubier
Kennard F. Bubier (October 11, 1902 - July 2, 1983) was a Gunnery Sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corps and an aviation mechanic known for being member of the 1928–1930 Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Bubier was born in Providence, Rhode Island. At retirement from the US Marine Corps he held the rank of lieutenant colonel. Bubier worked for Lockheed Martin for 11 years following his military service. He died in 1983 in California.. Recognition He was awarded the Navy Cross on October 25, 1930, for his service during the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. In 1930 Bubier, along with 80 others, received a Congressional medal titled the Byrd Antarctic Expedition Medal, for their parts in the expedition. Byrd Antarctic Expedition
Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. Byrd said that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. His belief to have reached the North Pole is disputed. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica. The Byrd Antarctic Expedition Medal is a Congressional medal established by an Act of Congress in 1930 to commemorate the Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1928–1930. Presented in gold, silver and bronze, the medals were awarded to 81 individuals associated with the expedition, for a total cost of $6,560. Mount Bubier is a mountain visible from seaward, its summit about south of the northern tip of Edwards Peninsula on Thurston Island. Thurston Island
Thurston Island is an ice-covered, glacially dissected island, long, wide and in area, lying a short way off the northwest end of Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. It is the third-largest island of Antarctica, after Alexander Island and Berkner Island. The island was discovered from the air by Rear Admiral Byrd on February 27, 1940, who named it for W. Harris Thurston, a New York textile manufacturer, designer of the windproof "Byrd Cloth" and sponsor of Antarctic expeditions. Thurston Island is separated from the mainland by Peacock Sound, which is occupied by the western portion of Abbot Ice Shelf. It divides Bellingshausen Sea to the east from Amundsen Sea to the west.
