Kenji Yamada (judoka)
Kenji Yamada (1924–2014) was a competitive judoka who was a two-time U.S. National Judo champion. Yamada was born in Sunnyside, Utah, but was raised in Japan. In 1941, he returned to the United States to rejoin his father in Seattle, Washington. A year later, after Executive Order 9066 was signed, he was imprisoned with other Americans of Japanese descent at the Minidoka National Historic Site, Minidoka Relocation Center in Idaho. Yamada graduated from Franklin High School (Seattle), Franklin High School in Seattle and later, the University of Washington. Yamada won the 1954 and 1955 US Judo National Championships where he competed at 150 lbs. In 1954, he lost to judoka Gene Lebell (who outweighed Yamada by about 50 pounds) in the open division finals in 1954 due to a judge's decision. Seattle Dojo
The Seattle Dojo is located at 1510 S. Washington in the Squire Park, Seattle, Washington, Squire Park neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. It is the oldest judo dojo in the continental United States, having been founded sometime before 1907 in what is today the International District, Seattle, Washington, International District. Establishment of the Seattle Dojo On October 17, 1903, a Kodokan leader named Yamashita Yoshitsugu, Yoshitsugu Yamashita gave demonstrations of judo at the Seattle Theatre. Witnesses included prominent local businessmen and journalists. This success inspired Seattle's Japanese immigrant community to organize its own judo dojo. Gene Lebell
Ivan “Judo” Gene LeBell (October 9, 1932 – August 9, 2022) was an American martial artist, stunt performer, actor, and professional wrestler. Nicknamed "The Godfather of Grappling", he popularized grappling in professional fighting circles, serving as a precursor to modern mixed martial arts. He worked on over 1,000 films and TV shows and authored 12 books. In 2000, the United States Ju-Jitsu Federation (USJJF) promoted LeBell to 9th dan in jujitsu and taihojutsu. On August 7, 2004, the World Martial Arts Masters Association promoted him to 10th degree. In February 2005, the USJJF made him 9th dan in judo.
