Kenji Takagi
Professor Kenji Takagi (1888–1963) was a Japanese orthopedic surgery, orthopedic surgeon, noted for being one of the first people to carry out a successful arthroscopy of the knee. Takagi was attached to Tokyo University (where he succeeded Yoshinori Tashiro) in 1918 when he carried out the ground-breaking operation on a cadaver. He had been influenced by the work of Danish surgeon Severin Nordentoft. In 1922, he went to Germany to study the use of x-ray technology there. Following World War II, Takagi's pupil Masaki Watanabe (surgeon), Masaki Watanabe, carried on his work. References

Arthroscopy (also called arthroscopic or keyhole surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure on a joint in which an examination and sometimes treatment of damage is performed using an arthroscope, an endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision. Arthroscopic procedures can be performed during ACL reconstruction. The advantage over traditional open surgery is that the joint does not have to be opened up fully. For knee arthroscopy only two small incisions are made, one for the arthroscope and one for the surgical instruments to be used in the knee cavity. This reduces recovery time and may increase the rate of success due to less trauma to the connective tissue. It has gained popularity due to evidence of faster recovery times with less scarring, because of the smaller incisions. Irrigation fluid (most commonly 'normal' saline) is used to distend the joint and make a surgical space. The surgical instruments are smaller than traditional instruments. ...

Yoshinori Tashiro
Yoshinori Tashiro (Japanese: 田代 良徳, ''Tashiro Yoshinori''), also known by his ring name or ''shikona'' of Tōōyama Katsunori (Japanese: 東桜山 勝徳), is a Japanese retired sumo wrestler and actor from Hachiōji, Tokyo. While an active sumo wrestler (''rikishi''), he wrestled for the Tamanoi sumo stable and made his debut in January 1999. He won the championship of the lowest division of ''jonokuchi'' in March 1999. Masaki Watanabe (surgeon)
Masaki Watanabe (渡辺 正毅, 1911 – 15 October 1995) was a Japanese orthopedic surgeon, sometimes called the "founder of modern arthroscopy". Watanabe developed the first practical arthroscope. Watanabe was born in Nagano and graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in 1937. He studied surgery under Professor Kenji Takagi, who, towards the end of World War I, had been one of the first surgeons to attempt to insert an endoscopic device into a patient. After World War II, Watanabe became director of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Tokyo Teishin Hospital, where he developed early arthroscopes during the 1950s, and, in 1958, he introduced the Watanabe no 21 arthroscope, which was equipped with a superior handmade lens.
