Kendenup
Kendenup is a small town in the Great Southern (Western Australia), Great Southern region of Western Australia, within the Shire of Plantagenet. It is known for its view of Porongorup and the Stirling ranges. It is south east of Perth and north of Mount Barker, Western Australia, Mount Barker. The Great Southern Railway (Western Australia), Great Southern Railway (established 1889) passes through the town, being one of the original stations on the line. At the Census in Australia#2006, 2006 census, Kendenup had a population of 1,290. The town was once the centre of a vast sheep station, and was, in the early years of the Western Australian colony, one of the largest farming enterprises so far established. At the time of the first European discovery, the area was known to local Indigenous Australian, Aboriginals as "Moor-ilup". John Hassell (settler)
John Hassell (178815 August 1883) was a prominent Australian pastoralist. Hassell was born in 1788 to Francis Carolus Tennant Hassell, shipbroker and merchant, and his wife Sarah, Govey, in London, England. As a young man he followed family tradition and joined the navy. He later transferred to the mercantile marine and then the Chilean navy, and was taken prisoner by the Peruvian navy for about a year. He arrived in Tasmania in 1822 and commanded ship along the trade routes between Sydney, Hobart and Launceston, eventually being granted in the Tamar Valley where he ran cattle. Returning to England in 1836 to 1837, and marrying Ellen Boucher, he bought a brig named ''Dawson'', which he stocked with goods and sailed to King George Sound. The business partner in the 'Adventure Syndicate' was his brother in law, Frederick Boucher, who remained in England.
