Ken Fletcher (Australian Footballer)
Ken Fletcher (born 21 January 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Bombers. He is the father of Dustin Fletcher who was drafted into the club through the father son rule. A former Essendon High School student who grew up in East Keilor, Victoria, Fletcher had two footballers as neighbours, they being Ken Peucker (No 29 Essendon) and Ted Flemming (footballer), Ted Flemming, a WA Sandover Medal winner (1930). Ken and his older brother practiced football skills daily in a nearby paddock as teenagers. Fletcher was a versatile footballer and played in many positions during his 264-game career for the Bombers. He excelled as a wingman and half back flanker. He won the club's best and fairest award in 1978 and represented Victoria throughout the 1970s. Australian Rules
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Dustin Fletcher
Dustin Fletcher (born 7 May 1975) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played his entire 23-season career for the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is widely acknowledged as one of the finest defenders in the history of the league. AFL career Fletcher was recruited by the Essendon Football Club in the 1992 National Draft. He played his first senior game against Carlton in his senior year of high school at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. He was a key member of the 1993 premiership team in his first AFL season, a team which is often referred to as the " Baby Bombers". Fletcher also played in the 2000 premiership team, a year in which he also won the Crichton Medal as Essendon's best and fairest and was selected in the All-Australian team. Essendon Keilor College was founded in 1992 from the amalgamation of Queens Park Secondary College (formerly Essendon Technical School), Essendon High School, Niddrie High School and Keilor Heights Secondary College. Ken Peucker
Ken Peucker (2 February 1935 – 15 February 2005) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Recruited from the Lincoln Stars in the Essendon District Football League, Peucker started out at Essendon in the Under-19s and played his first VFL game in 1954. A half-forward and rover, he kicked 27 goals for Essendon in the 1955 VFL season, a tally bettered by only two teammates. Peucker spent his next two years in South Australia and was the leading goal-kicker at South Adelaide in 1957. He returned to Essendon in 1958 but only played seven league games during the season. The following year he finished second in the Gardiner Medal count, for his contributions in the reserves, but also played for the seniors from round 14 onwards. Ted Flemming (footballer)
Edward Joseph Flemming (30 October 1902, date of death unknown) was an Australian rules footballer who played 229 games for West Perth in the WAFL/WANFL from 1922 to 1938. He is a half back flanker in West Perth's official 'Team of the Century'. Flemming was a versatile player and despite spending much of his career as a defender topped the league's goal kicking in 1925 with 50 goals. A dual West Perth Best and fairest winner, Flemming also won a Sandover Medal in 1930. He captained West Perth in the 1931 season and played in three premiership teams during the 1930s. He was a regular interstate football representative for Western Australia and played in a variety of positions for his state. Sandover Medal
The Sandover Medal is an Australian rules football award, given annually since 1921 to the fairest and best player in the West Australian Football League. The award was donated by Alfred Sandover M.B.E., a prominent Perth hardware merchant and benefactor. Voting system After each match, the three field umpires (those umpires who control the flow of the game) confer and award a 3, 2 and 1 point vote to the players they regard as the best, second best, and third best in the match respectively. Voting wasn't always done this way. From 1985-2018, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point votes were given, from 1930–1984, 3, 2 and 1 point votes were given, and prior to 1930 there was only one vote per game. Just like similar "fairest and best" awards, for example the Brownlow and Magarey Medals, if a player is suspended for a reportable offence throughout the season then they become ineligible to win the award.
