Kelvinside Academicals
Kelvinside Academicals is a former rugby union team that played their home games at Balgray Playing Fields, Glasgow, Scotland. The team was founded in 1888 by former pupils of the Kelvinside Academy. The team no longer exists. In 1982 it merged with Glasgow HSFP - the rugby team of another school; the High School of Glasgow - to form a rugby club called Glasgow High Kelvinside. In 1997, the 1st XV of Glasgow High Kelvinside merged with the 1st XV of Glasgow Academicals to form Glasgow Hawks. Both GHK and Academicals survived the merger as individual clubs and now compete in SRU National League 2 - 2 divisions below Hawks. In 2018 Glasgow Hawks relocated to Balgray from Old Anniesland to play their games there in the Tennent's Premiership as part of a new partnership with Kelvinside Academy. Scottish Rugby Union
The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Styled as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. The SRU oversees the national league system, known as the Scottish League Championship, and the Scottish National teams. Scotland National Rugby Union Team
The Scotland national rugby union team represents Scotland in men's international rugby union and is administered by the Scottish Rugby Union. The team takes part in the annual Six Nations Championship and participates in the Rugby World Cup, which takes place every four years. As of 4 December 2022, Scotland are 7th in the World Rugby Rankings. The history of the team extends back to 1871 when the Scottish rugby team played their first official test match, winning 1–0 against England at Raeburn Place. Scotland competed in the Five Nations from the inaugural tournament in 1883, winning it 14 times outright—including the last Five Nations in 1999—and sharing it another 8. Glasgow City Sevens
Glasgow City Sevens is an annual rugby sevens tournament held by Cartha Queens Park, in Dumbreck in the south side of Glasgow. The tournament was previously known as the Cartha Sevens and the Cartha Queens Park Sevens. History The first rugby sevens tournament started by Cartha RFC took place in April 1935 and continued for the following two years. After a break around the Second World War period the Sevens were reintroduced in 1950 and in has been played in all the subsequent years. The tournament became known as the Cartha Queens Park Sevens on the merger of Cartha and Queens Park F.P. in 1974. The tournament has been called the Glasgow City Sevens since 2005. Legacy Sevens competition Held around the start of every May, the tournament is part of the Legacy Sevens competition. Glasgow District (rugby Union)
Glasgow District was a Scottish amateur rugby union team which now plays as the professional provincial side Glasgow Warriors. Founded in 1872 it was a select provincial amateur rugby union team that drew its players mainly from the Greater Glasgow area, as well as others from the rest of the west of Scotland; roughly corresponding to the old Strathclyde regional council area. Historically the Glasgow District team played matches against touring teams visiting Scotland from abroad, and also competed in the Scottish Inter-District Championship. Vivian Weston
Vivian Weston (22 May 1914 – 7 May 1979) was a former Scotland international rugby union player. He played at Flanker but could also fill in at Lock. Rugby Union career Amateur career Weston played for Kelvinside Academicals. In the Second World War, Weston enlisted in the British Army. He played for the Army rugby union side against France on 1 January 1945, turning out as a Lock. Provincial career Weson played for Glasgow District against Edinburgh District in the Inter-City match of 5 December 1936.
