Kelvin, South Lanarkshire
Kelvin is an area of the new town of East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The area is a large industrial estate in the south-east of the town, surrounded by the St Leonards, East Kilbride, St. Leonards, Whitehills, East Kilbride, High Whitehills and The Murray, East Kilbride, The Murray residential districts, and Calderglen Country Park. The area is named after Lord Kelvin. In 1995, several modern units were built and the area was named Kelvin South Business Park with Sainsbury's latterly building a large warehouse/transport depot. In 2008, South Lanarkshire College (previously based at several sites in the area) opened its new centralised campus in Kelvin. East Kilbride
East Kilbride (; gd, Cille Bhrìghde an Ear ) is the largest town in South Lanarkshire in Scotland and the country's sixth-largest locality by population. It was also designated Scotland's first new town on 6 May 1947. The area lies on a raised plateau to the south of the Cathkin Braes, about southeast of Glasgow and close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire. The town ends close to the White Cart Water to the west and is bounded by the Rotten Calder Water to the east. St Leonards, East Kilbride
St Leonards is an area of the Scottish new town East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire. St Leonards is a residential area on the east side of the town. The majority of the area's streets are named after Glens, Islands, Rivers and Lochs from Scotland, for instance: Loch Shin, Loch Assynt, Glen Carron, Glen Tanner, Inch Murrin, Benbecula and Skye. About 39 streets are named after Glens of Scotland, 20 after Scottish Islands, 12 after Lochs and 7 after Scottish Rivers. St Leonards is well known for its red brick terraced houses in the Calderglen area, which can be seen from St Leonards Road approaching High Common Road. The Murray, East Kilbride
The Murray is a residential area in the new town of East Kilbride, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland; it lies immediately to the south-west of the town centre (access for pedestrians is mainly via underpasses beneath the A726 Queensway), and adjacent to the Westwood, Greenhills and Whitehills neighbourhoods to the west, south-west and south-east respectively. The Murray was the first new town development in the area and as such contains the oldest council housing in the town. However, much of this is currently undergoing renovation to improve its condition. Much of the original housing was paid for by Rolls-Royce, as it was intended as accommodation for the workers attracted to the town by the firm's factory. Calderglen Country Park
Calderglen Country Park is a country park in the town of East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is situated along the eastern edge of the town and is its principal greenspace and recreation area. Description The park opened officially in 1982 and features a small zoo, children's play facilities, display and exhibition venues, a tropical hothouse, and several sports clubs including Torrance Golf Club. The visitor centre and adjoining facilities are based in the 17th-century Torrance House – a Category A listed building – and the remains of its adjoining landscaped policies. The central area of the park is approached from the old entrance lodge house via the tree-lined driveway of the old estate. William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, (26 June 182417 December 1907) was a British mathematician, Mathematical physics, mathematical physicist and engineer born in Belfast. South Lanarkshire College
South Lanarkshire College is a further education institution in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Its campus is located in East Kilbride, with new buildings completed in 2008 at a site between the town centre and the Kelvin industrial area. The college was founded in 1948 as a building school in Cambuslang and had several sites for its various departments over its history, including at Blantyre, Motherwell, Hamilton and Wishaw. Its last site in Cambuslang was at the former Gateside School which dated from the 1880s, but was demolished soon after the college relocated entirely to East Kilbride.
