Kelly is an unincorporated community in Christian County, Kentucky, in the United States. Kelly is located at (38.218373, -85.353058), on U.S. Route 41. History The community is best known for being the location of the 1955 Kelly-Hopkinsville alien encounter, in which residents reported seeing unidentifiable creatures and lights at a rural farmhouse. In honor of this event, the community hosts the Kelly "Little Green Men" Days festival each year, where visitors can buy "intergalactic souvenirs". There are 120 counties in the U.S. Commonwealth of Kentucky. Despite ranking 37th in size by area, Kentucky has 120 counties, fourth among states (including Virginia's independent cities). The original motivation for having so many counties was to ensure that residents in the days of poor roads and horseback travel could make a round trip from their home to the county seat in a single day, as well as being able to travel from one county seat to the next in the same fashion. Later, however, politics began to play a part, with citizens who disagreed with their county government petitioning the state to create a new county. Today, 21 of the 120 counties have fewer than 10,000 residents, and half have fewer than 20,000. Christian County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 72,748. Its county seat is Hopkinsville. The county was formed in 1797. Christian County is part of the Clarksville, TN–KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The county is named for Colonel William Christian, a native of Augusta County, Virginia, and a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Area code 270 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the Commonwealth of Kentucky's western and south central counties. Area code 270 was split from area code 502 on April 19, 1999. Planning for the introduction of a second area code for the region, area code 364, was assigned in 2007. After several years of delay in activation, it was announced in December 2012 that the two area codes would be configured in an overlay plan in August 2013.
