Keith Smith (4 September 19172 June 2011) was an Australian broadcaster, radio and television personality, and writer. Biography Edward Keith Smith was born in Melbourne in 1917. He was taken out of school at age 13, as his parents could not afford to keep him there. He went to work in a foundry, doing painful and exhausting work, before being offered an apprenticeship as a signwriter. He started selling his comedy sketches to radio stations and appearing in radio plays for the ABC. He served in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands during World War II. On discharge in 1946, he moved to Sydney, where his career as an actor and writer took off. Smith's most popular program was ''The Pied Piper'' (initially radio, later on television), in which he conducted candid interviews with children. He also devised and wrote (with veteran radio writer George Foster) the scripts for the 13 episodes of the television series ''Mrs. Finnegan'', which appeared on Sydney channel ATN 7 from 1970 to ... Keith Archibald Smith, OBE, AM, MIE Aust, FCIT, (4 May 1915 – 16 July 2011) was Chief Mechanical Engineer, and later Commissioner, for the Commonwealth Railways of Australia, which operates mostly in remote and desolate areas railways for the Federal Government. Before joining the Commonwealth Railways, Keith Smith graduated with honours from Sydney University and was a locomotive designing and test engineer with the New South Wales Government Railways. During World War II, he worked at Chullora Railway Workshops supervising the production of war materials including the cruiser tank, bren gun carrier, Beaufort and Beaufighter aircraft projects. Sir Keith Macpherson Smith, KBE (20 December 1890 – 19 December 1955) was an Australian aviator, who, along with his brother, Sir Ross Macpherson Smith, Sergeant James Mallett (Jim) Bennett and Sergeant Walter (Wally) Shiers, became the first people to fly from England to Australia. Early life Smith's father emigrated from Scotland to Western Australia, and later became a pastoralist in South Australia. His mother was born in Western Australia, daughter of a Scottish pioneer. Both boys boarded at Queen's School, North Adelaide, and for two years at Warriston School, in Scotland. He flew in the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force as a pilot between 1917 and 1919. Career Despite the NCAA changing their rules to allow for four years of varsity play, Smith spent just three seasons with the Bears, graduating from Brown University in 1974. As a junior he was named to both the All-ECAC and All-American teams. He was regarded highly enough to be selected by the New York Islanders in the NHL Draft. Keith Lavarne Smith (born May 3, 1953) is a former Major League Baseball outfielder who played for the Texas Rangers in 1977 and the St. Louis Cardinals from 1979 to 1980.
